New: easy tables, links to any heading, unlinked mentions, paste web pages and rich text as Markdown, export as rich text. Plain Markdown on your Mac. A fast, native Markdown editor for your Mac. Open a folder of .md files and start writing — your notes stay plain text, in your own folders, and nothing leaves your Mac. No account. No database to import into. No subscription. Markdown Mate works with the files you already have, so you can keep organizing them in Finder, sync them with iCloud Drive or Dropbox, and version them with Git. WRITE, PREVIEW, OR BOTH • Editor, Preview and Side by Side views — switch with ⌘1, ⌘2 and ⌘3 • Markdown styled as you write: bigger headings, real bold, italic and code, with the symbols dimmed but never hidden • Select text and type * _ ` [ ( to wrap it; paste a URL over it to make a link • Smart lists: Return continues lists, quotes and to-dos; Tab and Shift-Tab indent and outdent • Optional line numbers: click one to select the line, drag over them to select several • Formatting toolbar and shortcuts for bold, italic, links, headings and code blocks • Tables made easy: insert one, line up its columns, add or delete rows and columns, Tab between cells, and paste cells from a spreadsheet • Paste from a web page, Pages, Mail or Notes: headings, bold, italic, links and lists arrive as Markdown • Paste or drag in images: they're saved to an "assets" folder next to your note and linked for you A RICH, OFFLINE PREVIEW • Code blocks with syntax highlighting • Math with KaTeX ($…$ and $$…$$) • Mermaid diagrams • Tables, task lists, footnotes and YAML front matter • Click a to-do's checkbox in the preview to check it off in your note • Copy button on every code block • Export any note as HTML, PDF, plain text or rich text, print it, or copy it as rich text for Mail, Pages and Notes FIND YOUR WAY AROUND • Folder sidebar: create, rename, move and drag files in from Finder • Bookmark the folders you use most and switch between them from the sidebar, the File menu (⌃1…⌃9) or Open Quickly • Open a folder with File ▸ Open…, from Finder (Open With) or by dropping it on the Dock icon • Open Quickly (⌘P): jump to any file by typing part of its name • Find in Folder (⇧⌘F): search the text of every note at once • Find in the preview (⌘F): every match highlighted in the rendered note • Document outline: see every heading and jump straight to it • #tags and nested #work/project tags, listed in the sidebar with their notes • [[Wiki links]] between notes, with a list of note names as you type [[ • Link straight to a heading with [[Note#Heading]], or copy a heading's link from the outline • Backlinks and unlinked mentions: the notes that link to this one, and those that only mention it • ⌘-click a link or tag to open it; hover an image link to see the image WORKS WITH YOUR OTHER TOOLS • Shortcuts actions: Create Note, Append to Note, Open Note • markdownmate:// links (x-callback-url) for Raycast, Alfred and scripts • Share a note with Mail, Messages or AirDrop; turn text selected in any app into a note with Services BUILT FOR SPEED Made with AppKit and SwiftUI, not a web wrapper. Typing, scrolling and the preview stay smooth even in multi-megabyte documents: the preview renders only the part you edit. Find in Folder searches thousands of notes in a fraction of a second. FEELS LIKE A MAC APP • Themes for the editor and preview — Paper, Graphite, Solarized or the system look — each in Light and Dark, with a one-click toolbar button to switch • Text zoom, your choice of editor font and line spacing, and a comfortable text width • Choose which buttons appear in the toolbar • Autosave, Versions and Revert, window tabs, Full Screen • Picks up where you left off: your windows, files and reading position come back after a restart • Word count, character count and reading time in the status bar • Make Markdown Mate the default app for .md files PRIVATE BY DESIGN Markdown Mate collects no data: no tracking, no analytics, no account. - Sort the sidebar by name, date modified or date created (View ▸ Sort Sidebar By, or Sort By in the sidebar's context menu). With a date, the newest notes come first and a note you save moves to the top of its folder; folders stay on top, sorted by name, and your choice is remembered. - Focus mode (View ▸ Focus Mode, ⇧⌘J, or Settings ▸ Editor): fades every paragraph except the one you're writing, so your eyes stay on the sentence at hand. It follows the cursor, works with typewriter scrolling and every theme, light and dark, and stays as fast in very large notes. Each list item counts as its own paragraph. - Today's Note (File ▸ Today's Note, ⌘D) opens today's daily note, Daily/YYYY-MM-DD.md in the open folder, and creates it with the date as its heading the first time each day. Choose the folder in Settings ▸ General. - Faster with large folders: with 10,000 notes, Backlinks show up in about 10 ms instead of half a second each time you switch notes, and Tags and Backlinks are complete about 1.2–1.6 s after launch instead of about 3 s. The app remembers what it read from your notes (in its own cache, never in your notes folder) and reads again only the notes that changed. - Uses less memory with a large folder open: about 140 MB instead of 180 MB with 10,000 notes. - Saving a note in a large folder no longer slows things down to refresh the sidebar's Tags: with 10,000 notes it's skipped when the save changes no tag, and takes about 60 ms instead of half a second when it does. - Fixed: the File menu shows Open Recent once again, instead of twice.
