DrywallCalc turns a room into a materials list. Enter the total length of the walls and their height, count the doors and windows, pick your sheet size and stud spacing, and it returns the boards, the studs, the screws and the compound, plus the cost of the boards.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
- Enter the total wall length and the wall height in feet, for one wall or a whole room.
- Count your doors and windows. Each one is deducted as an average 3 x 7 foot opening.
- Choose the board: 4x8, 4x10, 4x12 or 4.5x12, which the app treats as 32, 40, 48 and 54 square feet.
- Set stud spacing at 16 or 24 inches on centre.
- Set your own waste percentage, starting at 10 percent.
- Get the board count, rounded up, because half a sheet is not something you buy.
- Get the stud count, taken from total wall length divided by the spacing, plus one stud to start the run.
- Get drywall screws in pounds and joint compound in gallons.
- Enter a price per sheet and get the board cost for the job.
- Watch every figure update as you type. There is no calculate button.
HOW THE NUMBERS ARE WORKED
The net wall area is the wall length times the height, less the openings. The board count adds your waste percentage to that net area, divides by the area of one board and rounds up. A waste entry of 0, or an empty waste field, counts as 10 percent. Screws are estimated at about one pound per 200 square feet and joint compound at about one gallon per 100 square feet, both taken from the net area and rounded up to the next whole pound or gallon. The stud figure is a straight run count: corners, headers and cripples are not included.
