SmartChoice: Ingredient Scan
Food, beauty & supplements
Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
SmartChoice scans the barcode or label on food, beauty products, household cleaners, and supplements — and tells you in seconds what's really inside.
ONE SCAN, EVERY AISLE
• Food — a clear Approved / Caution / Not Approved verdict, with an editorial quality tier when the category supports it
• Beauty & personal care — INCI ingredients checked for parabens, formaldehyde releasers, phthalates, and other flagged additives
• Household cleaners — flags harsh and hazardous ingredients
• Supplements — reads the Supplement Facts panel and flags what to watch
KNOW WHAT EVERY INGREDIENT IS
Tap any flagged ingredient to see what it is, why it's rated the way it is, and where it's restricted — grounded in regulatory data from the FDA, EFSA, and the WHO's IARC monographs. When Red 40 carries a warning in the EU, you see it.
MAKE IT PERSONAL
Sign in with Apple to save your allergens (the FDA Big 9 plus EU additions), diet preferences (vegan, gluten-free, kosher, halal, and more), and health conditions. Every scan then checks against your profile and warns you the moment a product contains something you've flagged.
FAMILY PROFILES
One account carries a profile for every household member. A peanut allergy on your kid fires the warning even when you're the one scanning — and each warning names whose preference triggered it.
CAN'T FIND IT? ADD IT
If a product isn't in our database yet, snap a few photos of the label and get an instant assessment — and it's there for the next person who scans it.
COMMUNITY, MODERATED
Add a photo or video review after you've tried a product. Everything is reviewed before it appears, and you can report or hide anything inappropriate. Spot bad data on any product? Tap "Report incorrect info."
SHARE & SAVE
Star products to remember them, and share any verdict in a tap.
NO ACCOUNT REQUIRED
The full scan-and-verdict experience works without signing in. An account just adds personalization.
WHAT WE DON'T DO
We're not a calorie tracker, we're not affiliated with any brand, and we're not medical, dietary, or regulatory advice. Verdicts are editorial opinions based on publicly available science and regulatory data. Always read the label — and for medicines or health conditions, talk to a professional.
PRIVACY
Without an account, your scan history stays on your phone. When you sign in, your preferences are saved to your account, and so are your scans, so we can alert you to recalls. Adding a product, or reading a receipt or menu, uses AI to read your photos, and the app asks first. Nothing is ever sold, and you can delete your account from Settings at any time.
As an Amazon Associate we may earn from qualifying purchases via product links.
more • Adding a product: if the ingredients are printed on the front, tick "Ingredients are on the front" and submit with one photo.
• Auto-capture keeps your front photo instead of swapping it for another side, and Retake now opens the regular camera so you choose the shot.
• Photo reviews upload much faster.
• Small fixes for medicines added by shoppers.

• Wrong store? Tap "Not here?" and pick the shop you're actually in from the ones around you.
• SmartChoice now recognizes stores that sell snacks and treats without being grocers, like Barnes & Noble, TJ Maxx, Five Below and Dollar Tree.
• Restaurant QR menus: long menus now read reliably.
• Adding a product reads ingredient lists printed sideways, and skips the nutrition photo for non-food items.
• Cosmetics, cleaners, supplements and medicines without a photo can now get one from you.
• Medicines explain why products like mouthwash, sunscreen and hand sanitizer count as over-the-counter drugs.
• Settings › About lists our data sources.

• Restaurant QR menus: scan the code on the table and SmartChoice reads the menu dish by dish.
• Eating out: nearest restaurants first, pin the one you're in, or search by name. Round Table Pizza and Papa Johns added, and restaurants can now tell you themselves about their frying oil and allergy handling.
• Better on this shelf: when a product isn't approved, see approved picks spotted at the store you're in.
• Privacy: the app asks before AI reads any photo, with a switch in Settings. You can delete your own reviews, and clearing History also clears your account's copy.
• Fixed: family members' allergy warnings show again on barcode scans.

SmartChoice now recognizes hundreds more grocery chains — across the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Singapore — so the store you're standing in leads Home. The store picker adds the biggest chains in each country, including Canadian Tire.

What's new in 1.53
• Restaurant menus, dish by dish: photograph a menu and see every dish with its calories, the restaurant's own vegan and gluten-free marks, likely allergens — and a flag on anything that crosses your allergies or diet.
• Help fix the catalog: after adding a product photo, you can also snap the ingredients and Nutrition Facts panels. We check our ingredient list against the label.
• Smarter store detection: a weak location signal (like Wi-Fi off inside a store) no longer switches you to a store next door.
• Grocery Outlet and Smart & Final are now recognized.
• Food categories are sorted A–Z.
• Menus and new screens are available in German, French and Spanish.

What's new in 1.52
• Shelf scan: hold your camera over a shelf and see every product's score at once, with a green dot on the approved ones.
• Organic vs conventional: each ingredient now shows whether it's organic, and organic ingredients score higher. The biggest difference is for crops like soy, corn, wheat and oats.
• Baby food: purees, cereals and snacks are recognized, and added sugar, rice (arsenic) and added salt lower the score. Honey gets a warning for babies under 12 months.
• More aisles on Home, including Baby and Frozen, filled with top-rated products from the whole catalog.
• Vitamin notes: see which form of a vitamin a fortified food uses.
• Dairy Queen added to Eating out, with nutrition and allergens.
• Fixes: some barcodes showed the wrong product; they now say we don't recognize the product instead.
1.52 Sep 25
• A cleaner verdict screen: the product first, then the verdict — one score, one seal, and a line that says why
• Settings › Product photo: Large or Compact, your call
• Price trend: see how a product's price has moved at each store
• Store shelves show every product's score
• Cinnamon jars now say Ceylon or cassia — and why it matters for daily use
• Fixes and polish
1.51 Sep 22
• Adding a product: review every photo and retake any one before it uploads
• Shelf tags read themselves — scan a tag and the price is recorded for that store, today; photograph a whole shelf to record every tag
• See the steps while your submission uploads
• Product photos: the front is the front, every time
• Fixes and polish
1.50 Sep 21
• Adding a product: review every photo and retake any one before it uploads
• Upload photos on Wi-Fi only (Settings) — photos are saved and sent later
• Faster uploads from the aisle
• Prices are always filed under a store, in the right currency
• Fixes and polish
1.49 Sep 20
• Home now leads with the store you're in — its approved products by aisle
• Store tiles with real logos, and a band of perfect-score picks
• Points & rewards: earn for products you add, reviews, and friends you invite
• Share the app with a QR code, one tap from Home
• Search shows the score and where to buy, with Nearest / Store / Price filters
• Verdict sounds (optional): dings by score, a buzzer if not approved
• Faster: product photos and Home load from our edge
• Fixes and polish

Scan at a store, build its shelf.
• Tap "Scan at Sprouts" (or any store) from that store's page, and every product you scan now counts toward its shelf — no location permission needed. Turn on location and scans from Home count too.
• Store product lists load much faster: photos you contribute now get proper thumbnails.
• Photo uploads are about a quarter smaller, with more detail reaching our label reader, not less.
1.42 Sep 18
Scan in the store, credit the store.
• Scan a product inside Sprouts, Erewhon, Whole Foods or any store we recognize, and it now counts toward that store's shelf — no receipt needed. Store pages show their true product counts.
• The camera now refuses to score the front of a package as an ingredient list, and tells you to turn it over. Auto-capture recognizes modern, claim-heavy fronts.
• "Dairy-free" and "gluten-free" on a label no longer produce an allergen warning for the very thing they rule out.
• If a product you add is held for review instead of publishing, the screen now says why.
• "Why this score?" is now a Settings option, off by default, for a cleaner verdict screen.
1.41 Sep 15
Know what's in the fryer.
• Restaurant menus now show what each item is fried in, in the restaurant's own words — and highlight the places using a single, simple oil. Where a chain doesn't publish it, we say so plainly rather than leaving a blank.
• Add a product and see its verdict straight away, instead of a "we'll review it" message.
• Faster, clearer product photos and a tidier verdict screen.
1.35 Sep 11
Eating out, and a straighter answer about what a label actually says.
• Eating out (beta) — check in to a restaurant near you and scan its menu, with flagged ingredients marked in red. Switch it on in Settings.
• Origin, stated honestly — a jar that says "Packaged in the USA" no longer shows as "Made in USA". You see the claim the label actually made, in its own words.
• Contradiction flag — when a package claims "No MSG" but lists an ingredient that supplies it, we say so.
• Scan the label with no signal — the offline path now scores a label with no connection at all.
• Better label photos — hold the package at any angle and get an upright, sharp shot; small ingredient type reads without zooming; single-face packages no longer come away with no front photo at all.
• Zoom while the scanner is running, and zoom into a product photo at the resolution it actually has.
• Stores and chains near you now match the country you are actually in.
• Product photos — a product's default photo now leads its gallery instead of being left out of it.
• Your photos, credited — product photos you contribute now carry a small smartchoice.fyi mark.
• A tidier verdict screen, and fixes throughout.
1.34 Sep 9
Auto-capture is markedly better at reading a label. It no longer discards close-up frames while the camera refocuses, it picks up small ingredient type without you zooming in, and it returns an upright photo however you were holding the package.
Store lists now cover every country the app is sold in, including New Zealand and Latin America.
1.30 Aug 29
• Cat and dog food is now assessed by its own rules, per species — what is safe for you can be toxic for them, and the reverse is true too
• Product recalls now appear as a banner on the verdict, matched to the exact barcode
• Auto-capture now recognises the ingredients and nutrition panels reliably
1.29 Aug 26
• Fixed auto-capture not taking photos unless you moved the product — hold it steady and it works now
• Store list now follows where you actually are, not your phone’s region setting
• Photos taken with no signal are saved and uploaded automatically once you’re back online, so a scan in a shop with bad reception is never lost
• Fixed garbled ingredient text on some products
• Added Erewhon to the list of stores
1.28 Aug 26
• Adding a product now starts with auto-capture: turn it slowly in front of the camera and the app takes the front, ingredients and Nutrition Facts photos itself
• Labels held sideways or printed upside-down are now read correctly
• Waits until you hold the product still, and until the whole panel is in frame, before keeping a photo — no more half-cropped label shots
• Photos are always saved the right way up, wherever they are shown
1.27 Aug 24
• Report a problem by showing us the label — turn the product slowly in front of the camera and the app takes the photos it needs. Nothing to fill in.
• Scanned something we have no picture of? You can add one, and everyone who scans it after you will see it.
• Add up to four label photos when a long ingredient list does not fit in one shot
• When a product is repackaged, its timeline now shows the old photo beside the new one
• Products without a photo now show a distinct tile instead of an identical grey placeholder
• Nutrition Facts are now read from the panel you photograph, so high-in-sugar and high-in-sodium warnings appear on products we could not get nutrition data for before
1.26 Aug 23
• Eating out — A&W Canada menu items scored on the restaurant’s own published ingredients, ranked best-first within each part of the menu
• Tap any item to see exactly what is in it, with a link to the restaurant’s page
• Fixed: store shortcuts on Home now appear as intended — Costco, Walmart, Save-On-Foods, Loblaws and more, each opening the approved products our community has confirmed there
• Fixed: Score over time — products with more than one verdict now show how their score has moved, over shaded score ranges, with a marker where the recipe changed
• Fixed: articles and videos now appear on Home and on verdict screens
1.25 Aug 22
• Curated picks now leave out products containing your allergens or breaking your diets — on by default, and you can turn it off in Settings
• Search by name is back on the home screen, next to Ingredients and Photo
• Bug fixes and polish
1.24 Aug 21
• Score over time — see whether a product has improved or gotten worse, with the recipe changes marked right on the timeline
• Search by name moved to the Scan tab, so every way to identify a product lives in one place
• A cleaner Home screen
• Better handling of cleaning products and hand sanitizer, and clearer answers when we cannot read a label
• Bug fixes and polish
1.23 Aug 20
• SmartChoice now knows stores worldwide — "Shop where you are" recognizes major chains across Canada, Australia, the UK and Europe, Mexico and Latin America, alongside the US
• Store cards on Home now match the country you are in
• Much more accurate store detection
• Bug fixes and polish
1.22 Aug 19
• Shop by store — see the approved products our community has found at Walmart, Target, Kroger, Whole Foods, Costco, Trader Joe's, Sprouts, CVS and Walgreens
• My purchases — see which of the things you actually buy we would approve, with a suggested swap for the ones we would not
• Canadian "high in" labels: products high in saturated fat, sugars, or sodium are now flagged on the verdict card
• Bug fixes and polish
1.21 Aug 18
• You can now rate SmartChoice right from Settings — and we only ask for a review once the app has actually been useful to you
• Polish and stability improvements throughout
1.20 Aug 13
• Adding a product: if the ingredients are printed on the front, tick "Ingredients are on the front" and submit with one photo.
• Auto-capture keeps your front photo instead of swapping it for another side, and Retake now opens the regular camera so you choose the shot.
• Photo reviews upload much faster.
• Small fixes for medicines added by shoppers.
