Black & White Budget — opinionated, monochrome, beautifully simple personal budgeting.
Built around one idea: see exactly what's coming in, what's going out, and what's left to spend. No rainbow charts. No category overload. No subscription.
THE DESIGN
• Strict monochrome — no green, no red, no opinion-by-colour. Hierarchy comes from typography and weight, the way good print does.
• Every interaction respects the same 4pt grid. SF Rounded everywhere.
• Private by design — no login, no account, no telemetry. Your data lives on your device, or in your private iCloud with optional sync (Pro).
THE BASICS
• Add income and expense in seconds.
• Create categories and sub-categories with built-in icons.
• Set a monthly spending limit on any category. When you cross it, the app offers a "split" — push the overage into another category, cascading until everything fits, or choose to go over.
RECURRING
• Rent, salary, subscriptions — set them once, let them fire on their schedule.
• Upcoming view shows the next 30 days of expected income and expense, with a "balance after" line so you know what's actually free to spend.
INSIGHTS
• Monochrome donut breaking down spend by category for the focused period.
• Trend chart of income vs expense over days, weeks, months, or years.
• Plain-English deltas: "$120 less spent than last month."
NOTIFICATIONS
• Reminders when recurring transactions fire.
• "Due tomorrow" reminders before they fire.
• Low-balance alert when your total drops below your threshold.
SHARING & EXPORT
• Export everything to CSV or JSON via the native share sheet.
• Home-screen widget shows Capital + this-month flow at a glance.
• Long-press the app icon for "Add income" / "Add expense" quick actions.
OTHER
• Multiple budgets — Personal, Work, Family — switch with one tap.
• Two app icon variants — default and inverted.
• Replay the walkthrough any time from Settings.
Free. No ads. No subscription. A single one-time purchase unlocks Pro — iCloud sync across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
more • Add income and Add expense always open the right one, and Add income now suggests your income categories.
• The + now sits beside the tab bar, so it never covers a row.
• Skip next occurrence waits until you tap Save, and keeps your other changes.
• Apple Watch: a new number pad for amounts, figures that match the app, and it catches up as soon as you open it.
• Widgets and Live Activities count down to your next limit reset and show your currency’s own symbol.
• A full consistency pass: buttons, haptics, icons and spacing now behave the same everywhere.
1.3.24 22h ago
• Setting up a budget now asks when you get paid, so “Free until payday” works from day one.
• Share your Month in review as a clean poster.
• A full polish pass: one name for each thing, tidier spacing and type, and text that fits at every size.
• Widgets and Live Activities match the app, with every figure labelled.
• iCloud sync shows the price in your currency.
• iPad: an open sheet stays put when you resize the window.
• The app now reads “B&W Budget” on your Home Screen.
1.3.23 2d ago
• Tap a transaction, account, goal, limit or recurring payment and it opens right out of the card you tapped.
• Amounts now roll smoothly when they change.
• iPad with a keyboard: use ↑ and ↓ to pick a transaction, Return to open it, ⌘D to duplicate it and ⌘⌫ to move it to Trash. Step through months with ⌘[ and ⌘].
1.3.22 4d ago
• Log Apple Pay purchases automatically: add a Wallet automation in Shortcuts and each tap-to-pay purchase lands in B&W Budget on its own. Settings › Automatic logging shows you how.
• Shop rules: file a shop under a category once and B&W Budget remembers it. Manage them in Categories › Shop rules.
• Add an expense from Control Center or the Lock Screen.
• Larger text: the app now follows your iPhone's text size.
• Tidier layouts on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
1.3.21 5d ago
• Fixed: the Categories list now scrolls when you drag on a category, so every category is easy to reach again.
1.3.20 Oct 9
A tidier, more consistent B&W Budget on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
• Switches are easy to read in dark mode again.
• New and edit recurring now share one form, with the same fields in the same order.
• Editors look and behave the same everywhere: one Save bar, one Delete button, one way to close.
• Tap any recent transaction on Home to edit it.
• Categories, Accounts, Net worth and Goals share the same cards, add rows and swipe-to-delete.
• Settings has a Done button on iPhone, and pages inside it go Back.
• Small fixes across Insights, Limits and Mac dialogs.
1.3.19 Oct 7
Know what you can actually spend before payday.
• Free until payday: Home now shows what's left to spend before your next pay, after the bills and subscriptions still due before then. Tap it to see exactly what's set aside. It's on your widgets too.
• Savings accounts: mark an account as savings and it's kept out of what you can spend. Money you move to savings before payday is set aside too.
• Smoother everywhere: switches slide, upcoming charges look the same on every screen, search results match Activity, and Insights is quicker.
• On iPad and Mac, every section now sits in the same centred column, so nothing shifts as you move around.
• Deleting a single item for good from Recently deleted now asks first.
1.3.18 Oct 3
Clearer, calmer, and in sync everywhere.
• Your numbers speak plainly: "Capital" is now Balance, and Home shows exactly what's left in your limits and when they reset. It always matches your Limits screen, even on payday cycles.
• New Money tab on iPhone: accounts, net worth, savings goals and recurring bills, one tap away instead of tucked into Settings. Transactions is now called Activity.
• Redesigned widgets that match Home: your balance, what's left in your limits, and Income and Expense buttons right on your home screen. Plus a new Mac desktop widget, and a limits ring for the lock screen and Apple Watch.
• Changes you make on one device now update everywhere, including widgets, Apple Watch and the lock screen, even when the app is closed. Subscriptions and bills now post on their due day, even if you don't open the app.
• Switching between light and dark is instant across the whole app.
• Smoother everyday use: the add button slides out of the way while you scroll, the add menu explains every option, a new budget no longer guesses your first category, and on Mac the sidebar responds wherever you click.
1.3.17 Sep 28
Smoother, and more at home on every device.

• iPad and Mac: Accounts, Net worth, Goals and Insights now use the full width with two-column layouts.
• Changes made on your other devices now refresh every tab straight away.
• A handful of small fixes and polish.

• A gentle monthly reminder when your review is ready (toggle it in Settings).
• Polish throughout, including category icons everywhere they belong.
1.3.12 Sep 21

• Fixed a rare bug where duplicate copies of the same account could appear.

• Fresh start: clear every transaction while keeping your accounts, limits, recurring items, and goals (Settings → Danger zone).
