New: Sky Cover, rebuilt. Clouds, fog, rain and snow move with the wind on a 72-hour forecast map that opens in about a second. Fall color adds Europe, Japan and Korea.
Shutter Scout answers one question: is tonight worth the drive?
A conditions score for the places you actually shoot, built from cloud cover, moonlight, darkness and live sky activity - so you know before you pack the car.
Shutter Scout brings the conditions for your photography locations into one clear briefing. Check the shooting window, then inspect the weather, moonlight and sky data behind it.
SKY COVER
A weather map built for night photographers. Clouds, clarity, fog, and rain and snow draw in full forecast detail out to 72 hours, with thunder marked where it is possible. Press play and watch the weather move with the wind. Every layer opens in about a second and plays back smoothly. Add wind and gusts, smoke, radar and live lightning, and tap anywhere for a readout.
FALL COLOR MAP
Tap anywhere in North America, Europe, or Japan and Korea for a fall color score and the typical peak date. Press play to watch autumn sweep across the map, switch to Peak Week to see where color usually peaks this week, and find any place by name.
PLAN THE NIGHT
Find Milky Way windows, check the Moon and explore tonight's real sky before dark: Sky Tonight draws NASA's survey of the Milky Way and every bright star for your spot and minute, in every season. In winter, get rise and set times for Orion, the winter Milky Way and Andromeda. Use the planning tools to work toward a composition instead of arriving without a plan.
LINE UP THE SHOT
Drop a pin on a peak, lighthouse or skyline and the Viewfinder draws the sun, Moon or Milky Way core over your subject, with real terrain. Find the Spot suggests where to stand for the alignment you want, and the Alignment Window lists upcoming dates when it clears the skyline.
SHOULD YOU GO TONIGHT?
The hour-by-hour planner shows which hour looks best for your shot and what is limiting it. Emberlight maps sunset and sunrise color potential across your region and says when the forecast is solid or uncertain. The Week Ahead shows the dawns, dusks and clear nights worth planning around, wherever you are.
IN THE FIELD
Live View with tap-to-meter, exposure lock and one-tap infinity focus. Lens Tools for depth of field, hyperfocal distance, ND filters and sharp-star exposure times. Download an offline trip package before you lose signal.
FOLLOW THE CONDITIONS
Explore aurora activity, solar wind and NOAA forecasts. Check sunrise and sunset potential, weather warnings and coastal tides in the same app.
TAKE A PLAN INTO THE FIELD
Move from the overview to the timing, direction and starting settings for your shot. The adjustable Red Light screen provides a red light for use in the field.
MADE BY PHOTOGRAPHERS, BACKED BY SCIENCE
Built by a Pacific Northwest nightscape photographer, with NOAA space-weather data and astronomical calculations behind the planning tools. The photography in this listing is the developer's own work. Forecasts and planning scores are estimates; conditions can change.

Whenever I plan a trip, I first want to know the potential sunset/sunrise conditions. Shutter Scout nailed the prediction every night I went out last week, and the sunsets were beautiful. I wouldn’t have captured my photos without this app. It’s easy to use, and I love all the different features!
Developer Response
Thank you — this is exactly what Shutter Scout was built for. The prediction engine you're describing just got smarter in the latest update (it now understands wildfire smoke and mountain conditions too), with more on the way. Clear skies, and keep shooting.
NEW: Sky Cover, rebuilt. A fast, smooth 72-hour forecast map of clouds, fog, rain and snow that moves with the wind.
- PRECIP replaces Satellite: where rain and snow will fall over the next three days, with dots where thunder is possible. AMOUNT shows how much; CHANCE shows the odds (US).
- WIND adds GUSTS.
- Clouds, clarity, fog and rain draw in full forecast detail, with no blocky edges, exactly where the forecast puts them.
- Every forecast layer opens in about a second and fills all 72 hours in about 20 seconds. Playback runs at a smooth 60 frames per second.
- Tap anywhere on the map for a readout.
The Fall Color Map goes global: Europe, and Japan and Korea, join North America. Search any place by name, or jump to your saved spots.
Winter sky: rise and set times for Orion, the winter Milky Way and Andromeda, and the Daily Report recommends them on dark, clear nights.
Emberlight scores are steadier and more accurate, and say when the forecast is solid or uncertain. The Week Ahead on Today shows the dawns, dusks and clear nights worth planning around, and always names the place it is for.
Also: warnings and watches list newest first, and Settings has a new section about the photographer behind the app.
