HARBOR — find the boats before the fog lifts • A foggy-harbour take on the naval guessing game. Light a lantern over a cell: a ripple is open water, a warm glow is a boat. • A glow keeps the turn, so a good guess runs on. Light a whole boat and it is walked to the pier. • Set your boats by hand or let them settle themselves, and pick one of three opponents: Gentle, Lively and Blazing. • A duel of the day joins the daily ritual — the same harbour and the same opponent for everyone. DOUSE — keep the embers off the roofs • A bonfire burns beyond the hill and the wind carries embers down onto the village. Tap the sky: the nearest well sends up a drop, and where it lands it opens into a ring of spray. • The ring puts out every ember that drifts into it, so aim ahead of an ember rather than at it — the drop takes its time to get there. • Ten waves, about three minutes, and three winds: Gentle, Lively and Blazing. Houses and unused water both pay a bonus, and a good wave lets one smouldering roof catch its breath. • Endless night: the waves keep coming, each a little harsher, until every roof smoulders — with a best score of its own. MEET THE HEARTH • Your opponents now have faces and names. Soot dozes off and then pounces, Moth follows the light, Kettle hoards and then boils over, Pip scurries in early, Hazel watches and remembers. • They sit down in Fend and in Harbor, each with their own way of playing — how strong they are is still the difficulty you pick. • The duel of the day brings everyone the same one, and it is not always Wick.
