Version 2.0 is a near-total rebuild. If you know version 1, almost nothing is where you left it — here is what changed. THE GLOBE IS A REAL PLANET NOW The old globe is gone. In its place: NASA satellite ground, real terrain height and real ocean depth, drifting clouds, city lights on the night side and an atmosphere rim. The Sun is placed from the real clock, so the day and night line on the globe matches where the sun really is right now. Look outside; it agrees. PINCH MUCH CLOSER You can zoom far deeper than before, and sharper NASA ground fades in as you go. The teaching colours fade away as you close in, so your child ends up looking at the photograph rather than the map. TWO NEW "HOW IT LOOKS" SWITCHES Clouds off for a clear planet. Map colours off for the bare satellite Earth. FLY AND LAND (Explorer Pass) New in 2.0. Dive from orbit into 331 real places and 685 landmarks on Apple Maps photoreal imagery with real elevation, with actual 3D buildings where Apple provides Flyover and street level where Look Around exists. Every place is badged 3D BUILDINGS or 3D TERRAIN, so you know what you are getting before you dive. TIME MACHINE (Explorer Pass) New in 2.0. Scrub the clock twelve hours either way and watch night sweep the planet. Jump between twelve monthly NASA Blue Marble composites and watch the North snow over in December and green again in July. Switch on yesterday's real clouds from satellites. NARRATION THROUGHOUT Every line in the app is now spoken in one warm, natural voice — 3,961 narrated lines, covering every place, every fact and every prompt. A child still learning to read can use the whole app by listening. Included at no cost. ASK KORE (Explorer Pass, off by default) New in 2.0. Your child can tap a microphone and ask a question out loud about the place on screen, and hear a two-sentence answer in that same voice. It stays off until a grown-up turns it on behind a parental gate. Speech becomes text on the device; that text is sent to Google Cloud Vertex AI to be answered, where content is not used to train Google's models, and neither the question nor the answer is stored by the app. KORE CAN TAKE YOU THERE Ask about somewhere far from the place on screen — "where is Mount Fuji?" while looking at Asia — and Kore answers, then offers to fly the globe there and land. The offer waits for a tap: the globe never moves on its own. HOW IT'S GOING A new page for grown-ups: how many questions your child asked, which places, which subjects. Built entirely on the device, visible only to you, erasable in one tap. MORE OF THE WORLD Four levels now, chosen by the child: 7 continents, 237 countries with borders, 199 capitals and 132 big cities. Every place in every level carries a hand-written, kid-friendly fact — 427 in all. My Passport now tracks per-continent progress, quiz wins and best streak. STILL TRUE No ads, no analytics, no third-party trackers, no account and no sign-in. Thank you for exploring with us. If anything feels wrong, write to us. We read every message.
