Redaction that checks its work

Redact the built-in sample document end to end before you trust it with a real file. Every export is re-checked for recoverable text before it is called redacted. A black rectangle drawn over a PDF is not a redaction. The text is still underneath, one copy and paste away. Silo Redact removes it, then attacks its own output to prove the removal held. Open a PDF and Silo Redact proposes what to remove: Social Security, card, bank routing and employer ID numbers, driver's license and passport numbers, emails, phone numbers, dates, postal addresses, form-field values and personal names, with text recognition for scanned pages. Drag on the page to add your own box for anything it missed. Nothing is removed until you have accepted or rejected every suggestion; Apply stays locked while any are pending. Apply rebuilds every page from redacted pixels. The exported PDF is image-only: no text layer, form field or metadata from your original survives anywhere in the file. That is what makes the redaction unrecoverable. It also means the output is not searchable, so keep your original for your own reference. Then the verifier re-opens the export and tries to get your text back: two independent text extractors, a structural scan, a fresh text-recognition pass over every page and embedded image, a byte-level sweep for recoverable images, and a check that nothing unreviewed slipped through. A file that passes is exported with a -REDACTED name, and you can save its verification report separately; the report lists each check and the SHA-256 hashes of input and output. If the review cannot be fully corroborated, the file is labelled UNVERIFIED. If any removed text is proven to survive, it is labelled FAILED-DO-NOT-SEND and never presented as a redaction. Not ready to open a real file? The built-in sample document runs the whole cycle (detect, review, burn, verify) on invented data, with no download. Batch scans a whole folder against a saved detection profile and queues each file's findings for you to open in Review. It never accepts or applies anything for you. Reason codes you define can be burned inside each box, so a production shows why every item was withheld. Clean & Verify strips hidden data from PDFs and images (document info, XMP, embedded scripts and actions, attachments, page thumbnails, EXIF and GPS) and then re-checks the result independently. Your source file is never modified, and a clean that does not verify is quarantined instead of saved. Detection, burn-in and verification run on your Mac with no account. An optional contextual detection tier is a separate download that asks first; decline it and everything above still works. Detection is tuned for English-language documents and US identifier formats. Silo Redact helps you find sensitive content; it cannot guarantee it found everything, and the final review is yours. Requires macOS 14 or later on Apple Silicon.

  • This app hasn’t received enough ratings or reviews to display an overview.

A faint or noisy scanned page could be verified PASS even though the text check read nothing on it. Verification now also looks on every page for content the text check could not read, such as faint print, handwriting or a signature, and for text inside a checkbox or signature box. Until you review it, that content labels the export UNVERIFIED, and the report names the page. If this closer look reads an identifier that detection missed, such as a Social Security or card number, the export is labelled FAILED-DO-NOT-SEND. Identifiers you chose to keep visible are not counted against it. When you have looked at an area such as a signature or stamp and want it left as it is, choose Mark reviewed and drag around it. The area stays visible and the app does not check it for unread content: that review is yours. The report lists each reviewed area with its page and position, and a PASS says how many areas were left visible and not verified. Anything you chose to redact is still checked there. A page whose reviewed areas cover more than half of it is UNVERIFIED, and an export with reviewed areas cannot be certified with your certificate. Silo Redact now confirms its App Store purchase when it opens. If the check fails, the window says why and offers Try Again, which may ask you to sign in to the App Store. On a Mac where your purchase was already confirmed, a slow App Store no longer stops it from opening. After a FAILED-DO-NOT-SEND or UNVERIFIED result, the report now offers Start fresh review next to Back to review. It discards every finding and decision, manual box and reviewed area for that document and removes the export and the report, but keeps the imported PDF, so you can run detection again and review it from the beginning without importing it again. Before it detects or applies, Silo Redact now checks that its copy of your PDF still matches the file you imported, and stops instead of working on a copy that has changed. Your answer to the welcome screen and the detection profile you choose in Review are now remembered the next time you open Silo Redact. Silo Redact could also fail to open when another app was using the local port it picked; it now picks a free one.
