SurfBound: Surf Tracker & Log
Wave Count on Your Wrist
Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPhone. Not verified for macOS.
SurfBound is a surf tracker for your watch - Apple Watch and Garmin both record: one tap and you're in - waves, speed, GPS tracks, and heart rate record themselves. Zero interaction in the water; turn the crown to finish.
AUTOMATIC TRACKING
- Detects every wave: start, end, top speed, distance, and track
- Apple Watch Ultra Action Button: set it to SurfBound to start a session with one press - then each press after a wave marks it (even after paddling back)
- Any Apple Watch: turn the crown backward one full turn on the session page to mark your wave
- Power-loss protection: if the watch dies, your session is recovered
- Exit reminder: forget to end a session and the watch will ask
REPLAY & CORRECTIONS
- Map replay on iPhone with wave-by-wave breakdown and tap-to-seek
- Reject false waves, add missed ones - your corrections make detection smarter
JOURNEY & LEVELS
- Surf journey staged by water hours - we walk the first 20 hours with you
- Spot footprint: every break levels up on its own, from Visitor to Homebreak
- The watch session screen tints with your level: blue on a first visit, gold at your home break
- Weekly streak with flat-week exemption - the ocean resting doesn't break your chain
CONDITIONS & TIDES
- Built-in spots worldwide with swell, period, wind, and tide curves
- Watch widgets for at-a-glance conditions
LINEUP
- Share a session with your surf friends: route, waves and the day's conditions
- Get shakas and comments from people who surf
- Only followers you approve see your shares, unless you make your account public
YOUR DATA IS YOURS
- Tracking needs no sign-up - iCloud is your identity; only Lineup uses Sign in with Apple
- Sessions live on your devices and your iCloud; we never sell data
GARMIN WATCHES
- Install SurfBound from the Connect IQ store (free) and press START
- Wave count, speed and the track of every ride are computed on the watch, then travel to your iPhone on their own
- Replay, labelling, journey and levels work exactly as they do with Apple Watch
Requires Apple Watch Series 4 or later (Ultra recommended), watchOS 10+, iOS 18+.
Garmin users need SurfBound on iPhone, the Garmin Connect app, and the SurfBound watch app from the Connect IQ store.

1.1.6 6d ago
While building SurfBound we kept asking the surfers around us: what actually makes you better?
Beyond technique, reading waves and take-offs, the answer was almost always the same: time in the water. And having people to paddle out with and talk it over with is what keeps you putting in that time.
So in this version SurfBound goes from recording to sharing.
New: Lineup
- On a session page, tap "Post to Lineup" to share it. You choose what goes with it: route, wave count, conditions. You can add a few words too.
- Others can give a shaka, comment, and @mention each other.
- Follow other surfers and see their latest sessions in the feed. Keep your account public, or visible only to people you approve.
- Everyone gets a personal link and QR code. Send it to a friend to follow each other.
- Accounts with Pro carry a Lineup badge on their avatar.
New tab: Map
- Your surf footprint. Spots you have surfed are coloured by how well you know them; the rest are small grey dots.
- Tap a spot to see your history there and the current conditions.
Improvements
- When you sign in to Lineup, Apple asks whether to share your email. You can hide it. We use it only to reach you if something goes wrong with your account.
- The home screen reminds you of watch setup you haven't finished.
- After you buy or change a plan, the subscription page updates right away.
- Fixes to wording and display.

1.1.5 Oct 15
New
- Import from Apple Health: surf sessions recorded by other apps can come in, with the route when there is one. Tap the bell at the top right of the home screen. You'll get a notification when there's a new one to import.
- Boards can be edited. Fix a wrong size and the sessions that used that board update too.
- Tap a wave in the replay and the map frames the whole ride.
- Garmin connection status: Settings shows when data last arrived, the watch app version, and whether the previous session ended abnormally, with one tap to copy it for support.
Improved
- A new brand color: a calm ink blue that stays readable in dark mode.
- Current conditions on the map now use the same buoy readings as the home screen.
- Cancelling a sticker or card share no longer uses up a free share.
- The circular watch-face widget is now called Wave Outlook: today's height plus the next three days.
- Imported sessions can take a felt wave count, and show a map in the list.
- Wording and display corrections.

1.1.4 Oct 3
New
- Garmin sessions now show the average speed of each ride. Your watch was already working it out; the phone had been throwing it away. New sessions get it once the watch app is updated — older ones are not filled in after the fact.
Fixed
- Once you tidy a session, the list shows the tidied wave count too, instead of disagreeing with the detail screen.
- The spot progress line in Achievements showed raw formatting instead of your session count. It reads properly now.
- Wording and display corrections.
Keep Surfing.
1.1.3 Sep 25
New
- Delete now means clean: deleting a session also clears the watch copy and the workout SurfBound wrote to Apple Health (health data from other sources is untouched). Sessions you marked "not surfing" in the past are cleaned up the same way after updating.
- The list folds accidental starts automatically: short mis-tap fragments collapse into one row, so the list keeps only real surfing — expand any time to find them.
The invisible big one
- This release we got properly obsessive about how your data travels from watch to phone: transfers cut off halfway, a phone that got the file but forgot to say so, storage having a bad day — we rehearsed every disaster in advance so every wave makes it home alive.
- Deletes come with bookkeeping too: nothing counts as done until the other device confirms it really cleaned up; if the message goes missing, we keep a note and finish the job next time they meet.
- No new screens to admire — your waves are just much harder to lose now. That's where the engineers went surfing this time.
Improvements
- Ride numbers closer to how it felt: the longest wave on the share card, the session anatomy and the watch summary no longer count the paddle back after the wave (matching the session page).
- Garmin users no longer see Apple Watch permission warnings that don't apply to them; the Garmin sync row reads clearer.
- Smoother page switching with the Digital Crown while recording.
- Fixed clipped labels in several languages and cleaned up singular and plural forms.
1.1.2 Sep 12
New
- A redesigned session page: the essentials at a glance
Open a session and see what matters — the replay map, your felt wave count, and the stats. Marking missed waves and organizing wave by wave move to a dedicated Organize Waves page: the map stays pinned on top and the whole screen belongs to the wave list.
- Felt first, detected second
Once you enter how many waves it felt like, the big number in the list and on the session page is yours; the auto-detected count steps back to a small caption.
- More trustworthy Garmin sync
The watch is only told a session arrived after your iPhone has truly saved it, resent track chunks merge into the existing record, and sessions that never reached the phone are no longer cleaned up after relaunching the watch app. SENT on the watch now means your iPhone confirmed it — otherwise it says WILL RESEND and retries next launch.
Improvements
- Update notes now show full screen.
- Fixed layout issues in the wave-count row with larger numbers.
- Various translation fixes.
1.1.1 Sep 8
New
・Garmin watches are now supported
Install SurfBound on your Garmin from the Connect IQ store (free) and press START. Wave count, speed and the track of every ride are computed on the watch, then travel to your iPhone on their own — replay, labelling, journey and levels all work exactly as they do with Apple Watch.
・Honest ride times
We used to count the paddle back as part of the ride, so rides looked longer than they were. Now only the part where you were actually on the wave counts, with a threshold that adapts to each ride's own speed so slow and whitewater waves survive. Older sessions use the new maths the moment you open them.
・A "probably not surfing" hint
Started a session by accident on the drive to the break? Sessions whose track sits more than 20 km from any spot now carry a hint — one tap to mark it as not surfing, or to tell us it was real. It only suggests; it never changes a number on its own.
Improvements
・Watch conditions widget: the swell arrow now sits inside the bar, so the bars are taller and six days of wave height read at a glance.
・Fixed the widget occasionally reverting to its unsubscribed look.
・Sessions still waiting on the watch re-queue when you open the app, and the watch shows how many are sending, with progress.
・The first-launch demo session now takes place at Bells Beach, Australia — a nod to surfing's spiritual home — and its track now rides toward the shore.
・Fixed Chinese text appearing in some languages.
・If a permission is off, we now tell you exactly where to turn it on: when Health “Workouts” write access or Location is off, the iPhone home tab and the watch start screen show a notice with the right path and an Open Settings button.
1.1.0 Sep 5
New
・Better sharing!
Tap share at the top right of a session to share the track on the map, or turn the track into a sticker and send it to your stories and chats.
The footer is yours to adjust: Keep Surfing, your journey stage and your total water time each show only if you want them to.
・Session review, refined: for surfers who want the detail
Play at 0.5x, loop a single wave, and tap a wave in the list to have the map take you straight to its take-off point, so you can see exactly how you moved on the water.
Starred waves are drawn in gold on the map, so the ones you picked stand out at a glance.
・Heart-rate zones (Pro):
Under "Heart rate × state", five zones show how hard this session was, with the time and share of each zone at a glance; older sessions are covered too. Heart-rate data is computed on your iPhone and never uploaded.
Improvements
・The forecast page shows swell direction as an arrow plus words (for example "NE swell"); the watch conditions widget marks the swell beside each day's height.
・The home conditions card uses the same pin as the detail page, with the spot name and its English name on one line.
・The wave list is no longer hidden behind the navigation bar, and tapping a wave no longer makes the list jump.
・"Heart rate × state" now follows the anatomy order: paddling, riding, waiting.
・The session page is tidier; the iCloud backup check moved to Settings and checks every session at once.
・When an update needs a new permission, it explains why first — the request appears only after you tap Got it.
1.0.9 Sep 1
The 7-day surf forecast is now free for everyone.
Forecast, unlocked
• The 7-day surf forecast on the spot page, daily wind and swell direction, and official CWA tides, no subscription needed
• Buoy-calibrated readings for Taiwan spots are open too
• (Pro) Conditions widgets on your watch face and iPhone Home Screen: wave height for the coming days without opening the app
Safer ending and pausing on the watch
• Ending now takes two crown turns: a buzz after the first, and progress resets if you stop
• Sitting on the end page for 15 seconds without touching anything returns you to the recording page
• While paused the recording page says so; a pause you didn't ask for buzzes and resumes itself after 10 seconds
• One crown turn on the last page resumes, no wet-finger tapping
• Water Lock re-engages 45 seconds after being unlocked mid-session
New spots
• California: 32 new spots, from San Diego and Malibu through Ventura and Santa Cruz up to the North Coast
• Hong Kong: Big Wave Bay (Shek O), Ham Tin Wan and Tai Long Sai Wan
Interface
• Settings regrouped, one card per group with the explanation inside it; more tidying is on the way
Also
• The summary reminds you to charge when the watch is under 50%
• The watch stops retrying when it has no network, saving battery
• Settings gains a "Link Garmin watch" entry (early testing, invite only)

1.0.8 Aug 29
This one is about the interface: what matters is visible at a glance, and what you need is where you'd look for it.
A clearer home screen
• Conditions in a single card: height, period, water temperature, weather and wind — no more scrolling
• Sessions grouped by year, each showing its track thumbnail and longest ride
• First launch now points out that you can pick your spot — conditions, tide and forecast all follow it
13 wave pools added
• A pool is about the weather, not the sea: its page gives you seven days of temperature and rain, and so does the watch widget
Clearer onboarding
• The watch tutorial is four sentences: why location matters, that the water needs nothing from you, how to finish, and what the background color says about your familiarity with the spot
• On iPhone, one line and one picture per page
• Your first synced session walks you through replay, rejecting false waves and entering your felt count — this is where the app starts learning your standard
The watch face, rebuilt
• Rising and falling tide at a glance, weather right in the header
• New corner slot: wave height together with the next high or low tide
• (Free) Pick the color you've earned at your spot
• (Subscription) Multi-day wave height bars: which day is worth it, straight from your wrist
Sharper alerts
• (Subscription) The weather-turn alert threshold is much higher now — it speaks up for real rain or thunderstorms, not drizzle
• (Subscription) During a session the watch watches for official severe-thunderstorm alerts; open the app before you paddle out and it checks for you
Also
• Several watch recording fixes, including sessions no longer disappearing from the list while they're still syncing

1.0.7 Aug 27
This one opens up the map.
Spots go from 78 to 236 across 20 countries - Brazil alone brings 45. You can search by country now, in whatever language you think in: "Japan", "Brasil", "日本", "한국" all work.
• Spanish, Portuguese and Indonesian join the lineup - 11 languages in all
• The curated wave list starts learning your standard: from the waves you have kept and rejected, it works out roughly how many you keep in a session. The more you mark, the closer it sits to your own feel
• Star a wave: tap the star next to the wave number and you are telling us that one was real. Starred waves are never tucked away automatically, and they feed your personal standard directly
• Share cards save straight to your photo library, and typing a caption no longer stutters
• Report a spot's coordinates from the top of the spot page - with this many spots, some will be off, and the people who surf there know best
• Fixed a Vietnamese label that was being cut off on the watch
Keep Surfing
1.0.6 Aug 24
First, a thank-you to every surfer out there.
Every session you record and every misdetection you flag makes SurfBound sharper. Much of this release comes straight from your reports.
• Felt wave count: right after a session, log "how many waves it felt like" on your watch — or any time on your phone. That one number pulls your curated wave count closer to how it really felt (it will never drop below what you remember), no wave-by-wave labeling needed
• Weather alerts in the water (subscription): weather at sea deserves extra awareness. Mid-session, your watch taps you when heavier rain is forecast soon or pressure keeps falling; in Taiwan, official CWA severe-thunderstorm bulletins for your area arrive instantly
• Freer share cards: pick your stats, add a caption, track color themes (subscription)
• Important fixes: accidental ultra-short recordings are tucked away, vehicle misdetections no longer affect XP or water time, and the "back on shore?" reminder is more reliable
• Crown gestures are now opt-in (enable in Settings) so they never get in your way

- Spot list search (local or English names)
- Taiwan's built-in spots expanded to 36
- Layout fixes across all languages; GPS-glitch speed spikes corrected automatically
