Qmacs Editor
Encrypted programmable notes

Write local Markdown, keep private notes in an encrypted vault, and explore Lisp workflows in a native Mac editor.
Qmacs Editor is a native macOS workspace for local text files and encrypted vault notes.
Start with a blank Untitled.md document. Open and create documents in the Files collection, and keep protected documents in the separate Vault collection. Documents have no fixed count limit. Choose a default folder for new file Save As; ordinary files remain plaintext on disk.
LOCAL EDITING
- Native editor with Undo and Redo, Markdown preview, keyboard commands, and syntax highlighting.
- Open, save, rename, and move ordinary text files using native file panels.
- Preserve supported text encodings and byte-order markers when saving.
- Detect changes made on disk since opening or saving a file, and keep unsaved edits until you reopen the file or choose Save As.
- Choose Light, Dark, Qmacs, or custom JSON editor colors.
ENCRYPTED VAULT
- Local Argon2id password derivation and XChaCha20-Poly1305 authenticated encryption.
- Create a vault in the app's local container or a folder you select, then unlock it when protected notes are needed.
- Change the master password by re-encrypting the vault.
- Vault format v2 checks its unlock configuration against an authenticated encrypted copy.
- Retain the preceding encrypted vault file as vault.qmacs.backup when saving an existing vault. A backup retained during password rotation still uses the preceding password.
- Preserve existing encrypted snapshot data during password changes.
Optional TOTP or static-code verification adds a supplemental local unlock check. These checks do not independently protect a copied vault from someone who also knows the master password. Hardware FIDO2 authentication is not implemented. The master password is retained in memory while the vault is unlocked and is not saved in configuration.
PROGRAMMABLE WORKFLOWS
Run small local Lisp queries over document titles, tags, and text. Edit RQmod audit declarations with syntax highlighting and an MVP validator. RQmod validation does not execute a quantum backend or generate CBOM or QASM evidence.
Preferences are stored in the real user's ~/.qmacs/config.json. Use Settings > Files > Allow ~/.qmacs Access to grant sandboxed folder access before saving preferences there. The default file-save folder starts at Documents and can be changed separately from the vault folder.
No account or server is required. Network sync, ML-KEM, and ML-DSA are not active features of this version.

Version 0.2.0 updates local document workflows and vault handling.
- Start with a blank Untitled.md document and keep Files and Vault in separate sidebar collections without a fixed document count limit.
- Choose a default Save As folder for ordinary files and retain preferences in the real user's ~/.qmacs/config.json after granting folder access.
- Preserve supported text encodings and detect external file changes before saving, keeping unsaved edits available.
- Use document-specific Undo and Redo; vault editing history is cleared when the vault locks.
- Save vault format v2 with authenticated metadata checks and retain the preceding encrypted vault file as a backup.
- Import trusted legacy vaults explicitly, preserving the original encrypted file as a backup.
- Preserve existing encrypted snapshot data when rotating the master password.
- Clarify that TOTP and static-code verification are supplemental local unlock checks.
- Update local vault operations and validation of malformed encrypted files.
