Layouto is a small, quiet menu bar app that helps everything you type come out right. It expands short abbreviations into full text, fixes simple typos, and catches words typed in the wrong keyboard layout.
TEXT EXPANSION
Type a short abbreviation and get the full text: "!hb" becomes a birthday wish and "addr" fills in an address, both ready out of the box. Build your own snippets for sign-offs and replies, with the date in any format, the clipboard, fields that ask for a value or offer a choice, Tab and Return for forms, and bold, italic and links. Snippets can include one another and can expand without a space. Press Control-Option-Command-V in any app to search them, and import or export the whole set whenever you like. Abbreviations also work with Japanese, Chinese Pinyin, Korean and Vietnamese Telex input.
TYPO CORRECTION (OPTIONAL)
Layouto fixes simple typos automatically in 20+ languages, using your Mac's own dictionary and a word frequency check. Mistype one letter, as in "definately" for "definitely," and Layouto catches it. It only corrects toward a real, common word, so the words you meant are left alone.
AUTOMATIC LAYOUT SWITCHING
When the keyboard is still set to another language, typing "hello" gives you "ηελλο" instead. Layouto spots a word typed in the wrong keyboard layout and rewrites it in the right one as you type. Korean works both ways: "dkssud" typed with English on becomes "안녕". If a fix is not what you wanted, double-tap Shift to undo it or to cycle through your layouts.
It works in the apps you use every day: Messages, WhatsApp, Mail, Notes, Slack, your browser and more.
APP EXCEPTIONS
If you write code in Terminal or VS Code, add them as exceptions and Layouto will leave your commands alone. Any app can be an exception.
MY WORDS
iPhone, iCloud, macOS and the words you add to My Words keep their exact spelling and capitalization. If one of them is typed in the wrong layout, it is fixed too.
40+ LANGUAGES
Arabic, Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Turkish, German, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, Polish, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Greek, Vietnamese and Korean are corrected automatically as you type. Dozens more, including Hebrew, Hindi, Armenian, Georgian, Bengali, Telugu, Gujarati and Punjabi, convert with a double-tap of Shift and need no setup. If your language is missing, drop a Hunspell dictionary into ~/Library/Spelling and Layouto will correct text in that language automatically too.
ACCESSIBILITY
Layouto is built to stay usable when you cannot watch the screen closely.
• Spoken corrections. VoiceOver announces every correction Layouto makes as it happens, so your text never changes silently. Layout changes are announced too, so you always know which layout you are typing in.
• Large layout indicator. An optional high-contrast overlay shows the name of the new layout on screen when it changes, so you do not have to read the small menu bar icon. It follows your Reduce motion, Reduce transparency and Increase contrast settings.
• Less typing. Corrections save deleting and retyping, and shortcuts turn a few characters into a full phrase, which matters when typing is physically hard.
• Every control in Settings is labeled for VoiceOver.
Layouto has no analytics, no tracking and no network connection of any kind. What you type stays on your Mac, and everything works fully offline.
