DNS Taskbar
Live DNS latency and lookups
Only for Mac
$0.99
Mac
Watch DNS latency to Cloudflare, Google, Quad9, and your own resolvers, plus instant dig-like lookups over UDP and DNS-over-HTTPS. No account, no tracking.
See how fast your DNS really is, right from the menu bar.
DNS Taskbar is a native macOS menu bar utility that continuously measures DNS query latency to the resolvers you care about. It ships ready to compare Cloudflare (1.1.1.1), Google (8.8.8.8), and Quad9 (9.9.9.9), and you can add any resolver of your own — including resolvers on your local network.
ALWAYS-VISIBLE LATENCY
See compact, fixed-width millisecond latencies in the menu bar, colour-coded by health so a slow or failing resolver stands out at a glance. As you monitor more resolvers, the display automatically steps down to a more compact tier, or pick a primary resolver or summary view yourself.
QUICK DNS LOOKUP
Left-click the menu bar item to open the lookup field, then type a domain, paste a URL, or enter an IP address. DNS Taskbar queries the resolver you choose and shows detailed, structured, dig-like results — A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS, SOA, CAA, PTR, and SRV records grouped by type with TTLs and rendered data, plus response flags, RCODE, timing, and one-click copy. Only the host and selected record types are ever sent to the resolver.
CLASSIC DNS AND DNS-OVER-HTTPS
Measure the same question over classic DNS on UDP port 53 or standards-compliant DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH). Run the UDP and DoH endpoints of the same provider side by side to see exactly what encryption costs you.
LIVE HISTORY, YOUR RANGE
Hover over the menu bar item for a smooth 15-minute scrolling latency graph, or open the detail window and choose a range from 15 minutes up to 7 days for current, average, p95, peak, jitter, and packet-loss values per resolver.
HONEST MEASUREMENTS
Latency is measured with a monotonic clock, so clock changes never distort a reading. A timeout is shown as real packet loss, never faked as an invented latency. Every displayed value comes from a validated answer to the exact question that was asked.
CONTROLS FOR REAL NETWORKS
- Add unlimited resolvers over UDP or DoH.
- Choose the poll interval, from 5 to 300 seconds.
- Set per-resolver or global good/warning latency thresholds.
- Pick a menu bar mode: automatic, primary resolver, or summary.
- Give each resolver a friendly name, icon, and accent colour.
- Launch at login and choose whether the app appears in the Dock.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
DNS Taskbar has no account, cloud service, analytics, advertising, or tracking. Your resolver list stays on your Mac, and DNS queries go only to the resolvers you configure.
REQUIREMENTS
- macOS 15 or later
- Network access to your chosen resolvers (UDP port 53 and/or HTTPS)
