ClassNotes: My smart notebook
Your smart notebook
Free · In‑App Purchases
ClassNotes is a handwriting-first notebook for iPad, built so what you write is exactly what stays on the page.
WRITE, DON'T FIGHT YOUR APP
Your Apple Pencil ink is recorded exactly as you draw it — no smoothing, no reshaping, nothing "cleaned up" behind your back. Turn on live beautification only if you want your handwriting typeset as you go.
SMART TOOLS, ON YOUR TERMS
• Hold a shape steady and watch it snap into a clean line, circle, rectangle, or triangle — still adjustable until you lift the pencil
• A real two-finger ruler for straight edges
• Paint bucket fill that flows under your ink, not over it
• Scribble to erase
• Sticky tape, text boxes, and photo/file drops
• Full undo/redo history, per page
NOVA, YOUR AI STUDY PARTNER
Circle anything — a diagram, an equation, a paragraph — and ask NOVA about it. It sees exactly what you circled, not just the text, so it can actually explain a graph or work through the diagram you drew.
MADE FOR NOTEBOOKS
28 cover designs, 14 paper templates, custom paper and line colors, multiple page sizes and orientations, and a dedicated whiteboard page for freeform sketching.
FIND ANYTHING
Search across typed text and your own handwriting — even pages you never touched with a keyboard.
STAYS IN SYNC
Sign in with a free ClassNotes account (optional) and your notebooks, pages, and attachments sync automatically, or keep everything on your device without one.
READ ANYWHERE
The iPhone companion app is a fast, read-only viewer for your whole library — perfect for a quick look between classes.
NOVA PLUS AND NOVA PRO (OPTIONAL)
NOVA is free. NOVA Plus ($3.99 a month or $34.99 a year) gives you 30 answers a day from Anthropic's Claude, and NOVA Pro ($5.99 a month or $54.99 a year) gives you 50. After the day's Claude answers, NOVA carries on with the free model. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the period, and you can manage or cancel them in your App Store account settings.
Free to use. No paywall on the notebook: every tool is free.

more Zoom that stays put.
- Pinching in or out now stays exactly on the spot you pinched, from the moment you let go. Before, the page could slip somewhere else for a moment and then come back, especially after a big zoom or when zooming back out.
1.6.4 4d ago
Steadier zoom, paste where you tap, and moving anything between pages.
- Zoom stays where you pinched when you let go, instead of jumping, even if one finger lifts first.
- The eraser takes paint off a fill as you move it, together with the ink on top. Cutting a fill in two keeps both halves.
- Copy, then tap anywhere on a page: Paste appears right there and puts the copy on that spot. Paste and the X now work with the Pencil too.
- Drag a selection to the top or bottom of the screen and the pages scroll, so you can reach the next page.
- A selection being moved stays whole on its way to another page, and lands in one step.
- Photos, text boxes, graphs and files can be dragged straight onto another page, no lasso needed.
- Moved things stay on the page instead of landing half off the edge, and circling or deleting right after a move works every time.
1.6.3 6d ago
Smoother zoom, real copy and paste, and moving things between pages.
- Pinch to zoom is smooth and stays exactly where your fingers are, even deep in a long notebook.
- Paste and Duplicate now place a real copy of what you selected: ink you can still erase and recolour, photos and text boxes you can still edit. The copy arrives selected, ready to drag, and the original stays where it was.
- Copy on one page, tap another page, and paste it there.
- Drag a lasso selection onto another page to move it there. One Undo puts it back.
- Graphs: choose how many ticks fit on each side of an axis, which sets how long each tick is. Five ticks of 1 on a short axis now fits neatly.
- Colours now live in each pen's settings, so the toolbar holds just the tools.
- A selection keeps hold of what you circled after you scroll away and back.
1.6.2 Oct 15
NOVA Plus and NOVA Pro, better pens, your own colours, and fixes for selecting, undo and dark pages.
- NOVA Plus and NOVA Pro: NOVA answers with Anthropic's Claude, 30 (Plus) or 50 (Pro) times a day, then carries on with the free model. Find them in Settings > NOVA plan. NOVA stays free, and so does every other tool.
- Pens write in the colour you pick on dark pages too. Black no longer comes out white, or white black.
- Save your favourite colours in the order you like. The first four sit on the toolbar beside the pens.
- New pen settings: choose a tip (gel, fountain or pencil), switch between three sizes of your own with one tap, and set the opacity.
- A real marker: solid felt-tip or chisel ink that shows up on any page.
- The highlighter can draw straight lines.
- The lasso selection now appears exactly where you circled, and cut, copy, duplicate, delete, colour, move, resize and rotate act on what you selected.
- Undo takes things back in the order you did them, across pages, one step at a time. It now also undoes rubbing out part of a word, and no longer brings back ink you deleted.
- The paint bucket fills the shape you tapped, small shapes snap when you hold the pencil, and handwriting beautification works on dark pages.
1.6.1 Oct 12
Fixes for writing, erasing and filling, and your notebooks on every device you sign in to.
- Erased ink no longer comes back. Erasing or undoing while handwriting was being tidied up could bring erased strokes back; now what you erase stays erased.
- Undo works straight after you write: it takes back exactly the last thing you did, even if you tap it the instant you lift the pencil.
- The paint bucket fills the shape you tapped. Small gaps in an outline are closed for you, and it no longer floods the whole page when a shape isn't quite closed.
- The lasso selects reliably: circling no longer scrolls the page instead.
- Sign in on your iPhone with the same account and see the same notebooks, with every page. Your iPad now uploads pages you haven't opened since signing in, too.

Use ClassNotes without an account, keep your notebooks the same on every iPad with iCloud, drag in PDFs and photos, ask NOVA about a whole notebook, and see PDFs sharp at any zoom.
- No account needed: tap Continue without an account and start writing. Sign in any time to sync and use NOVA. Your notebooks are never locked away if you're signed out.
- NOVA knows your notebook: tap Read this notebook, then ask anything about it. Answers show which pages they came from; tap a page to jump to it. When something isn't in your notes, NOVA says so.
- NOVA asks before it sends anything, explains exactly what it sends, and you can change your answer in Settings.
- iCloud sync: turn it on in Settings and your notebooks stay the same on every device signed in to your iCloud. If the same notebook changes on two devices, both versions are kept.
- Drag and drop: drop a PDF onto a page to add its pages, or drop a photo, text, a link or a file exactly where you want it. Drop files onto the library to make new notebooks.
- Shelves inside shelves, and tags. Drag a notebook onto a shelf or tag to file it.
- PDFs you import now stay sharp however far you zoom, their words are searchable exactly, and they export with the original text.
- Lasso: rotate a selection with the new handle, recolour it, make the ink thinner or thicker, and Cut (Command-X).
- Keyboard: Command-N for a new note, Command-F to search, Command-plus and Command-minus to zoom.
- Short tips the first time you use a tool, like the lasso or NOVA. Show them again from Settings.
- Support shows crash and speed reports kept on your iPad, and you can share them with us.
- Better VoiceOver support, clearer error messages, and a fix for tape moved with the lasso landing in the wrong place.
- A notebook written on another device now opens with Edit on this iPad: its pages come over as pages you can write on, with their voice notes, files and links.
1.5 Oct 11
Writing you can trust.
- Everything you write stays written: page saves now land strictly in order, so a quick exit or a fast reopen can never lose your last strokes.
- What you erase stays erased, even if you double-tap the Pencil to switch tools mid-erase.
- Deleted a page by mistake? Tap Undo, or bring it back from Recently Deleted in the page manager for 30 days.
- If a save ever fails (for example, your iPad is full), ClassNotes tells you plainly, keeps your work on screen and keeps retrying.
- Your library rebuilds itself from your notebooks if its database is ever damaged, so notebooks never go missing.
- A damaged notebook file is set aside and restored from its last good copy, keeping your images, text, bookmarks and page settings.
- Notebooks deleted from the ClassMate tab now go to the Trash on your iPad instead of disappearing.
- Large notebooks open, scroll and import PDFs smoothly, and you can keep writing while a PDF imports.
- Search inside your notes is much faster, and now finds the words in PDFs, scans and photos you've imported.
- Move or copy pages to another notebook: select them in the page manager and tap Send.
- Keyboard shortcuts on iPad: Command-Z to undo, Command-1 to 5 for tools, Option-Command-Up and Down to change page, Shift-Command-N for a new page.
- The lasso holds exactly what you circled. Drag it and the content moves under your finger; circle again to reselect, tap the page to let go.
- Scribble-to-erase only removes what you actually scrubbed out, never the line beside it.

ClassNotes now has its own account.
• Sign up with just an email and a password — no school account needed.
• Manage your account from Profile: change your name, change your password, or delete your account and everything it holds on our servers.
• Forgot your password? Reset it from the sign-in screen.
• Your notebooks stay on your device and sync to your own account.
Also in this update:
• Select, copy, paste, duplicate and delete are faster, and a pasted copy now lands where you can see it.
• ⌘C, ⌘D and ⌘V work on a selection when you have a keyboard attached.
• Fixed the paint bucket's eraser taking paint from the wrong part of a fill.
If you were signed in before, you'll be asked to sign in again — create a ClassNotes account and your notebooks are right where you left them.
1.3 Oct 3
This update is a reliability pass on the things you use every stroke:
• Ink colour now always renders exactly what you picked — including true black or white on a dark page, which could previously come out inverted
• NOVA answers more reliably when you circle or scan something to ask about it
• Apple Pencil's double-tap and squeeze reliably toggle the eraser (and your last tool) again, every time
• A rare case where a fast, cornered letter (like a quick M or W) could vanish along with nearby writing is fixed
• Pinch-to-zoom is noticeably smoother
1.0.2 Sep 17
This update is about polish and precision:
• Ink colour is now exactly what you pick, every time
• Resizing photos is smoother — no more flicker mid-drag
• Pinch-to-zoom feels more fluid
• Lasso-select: pasted content always lands on top, and a selection now resizes by its corner handle
• New: a straight-line tool — pick a direction, tap the page, get a perfectly straight line in your pen's own colour and thickness
• New: a library of ready-made graphs for the function-plot tool — math, physics and computer science, organized by subject, with your recent picks remembered
• Apple Pencil's double-tap and squeeze now correctly return to whatever tool you were actually using, not just the pen
1.0.1 Sep 12
Zoom that stays put.
- Pinching in or out now stays exactly on the spot you pinched, from the moment you let go. Before, the page could slip somewhere else for a moment and then come back, especially after a big zoom or when zooming back out.
