THE MOON, THE RIGHT WAY UP Here is a thing almost every star app gets wrong: the Moon does not look the same from everywhere. From Australia it hangs "upside down" compared with the pictures in northern textbooks — a crescent lit on the right in London is lit on the left in Melbourne. Stargazer now draws it tilted exactly as it appears from wherever you are standing, worked out from your latitude and where the Moon is in the sky this minute. Tap FLIP if you'd rather match a photo or a telescope that turns the image over. DRAG THE MOON THROUGH TIME Minutes, hours, days or a whole month. Scrub by month and watch it fill and empty. Scrub by minutes and watch something stranger: the phase barely changes, but the Moon slowly turns as it crosses the sky. Kids notice this immediately. Tap the Moon for a big one — pinch to zoom right in on the craters, then share it. IS IT REALLY BIGGER TONIGHT? Supermoons are always announced and never obvious, because a 7% difference is invisible without something to compare against. So now there is something: the Moon is drawn at its true size for tonight, with a dashed ring showing its average. Plus its distance in kilometres, and how big it looks in arcminutes. SPIN THE EARTH A new globe with all 677 satellites currently in orbit, wrapped around a spinnable, zoomable Earth. Search for one — type "hubble", or "starlink" to watch 500 of them swarm past in formation. Tap any of them for its altitude and how many times a day it laps the planet. READING THE SEASON Tonight now shows what the Boorong sky is signalling this month. In August: Neilloan means the mallee fowl are on their nests, and Tchingal the Emu stands up in the south. READING THE SEASON Tonight now shows you what the sky is saying this month in the Boorong reading. Right now, in August: Marpeankurrk marks the season for gathering bittur; Neilloan means the mallee fowl are on their nests; Tchingal the Emu stands up in the south. A star used as a calendar — which is exactly what the Australian Curriculum asks students to understand about First Nations seasonal knowledge. Only figures with a documented window appear. Nothing is guessed. SEARCH ACTUALLY FINDS CONSTELLATIONS Searching "southern cross" used to return nothing at all — constellations were not searchable, and Crux never calls itself the Southern Cross. Now it finds Crux, by nickname, IAU name or abbreviation. It also finds Bunya, Berm-berm-gle and Tchingal, because in the Boorong sky those same four stars are a tree with a possum up it. Big Dipper, the Plough, the Saucepan, the Teapot, the Seven Sisters and the Pointers all work too. THE SKY QUIZ NOW TEACHES THE BOORONG SKY New questions across all three levels: which star is Neilloan, what Tchingal is made from, and what the Boorong read from Lyra rising in March. Every answer names the nation it came from.

A FIRST NATIONS SKY Stargazer can now show you the Boorong sky instead of the Greek and Roman constellations. The Boorong are a clan of the Wergaia language group of north-western Victoria, and in 1857 a Boorong family at Lake Tyrrell shared some forty star names and figures with William Stanbridge, who wrote that they "pride themselves upon knowing more of astronomy than any other tribe". • 27 figures with their original artwork, each named in language with the English meaning underneath • TCHINGAL, THE EMU — a dark constellation, made not from stars but from the starless dust lanes of the Milky Way. Its head is the Coalsack beside the Southern Cross and it stretches about 90° across the sky, far larger than any Greek figure. You need a dark sky to see it, and once you have, you cannot unsee it. • Star names switch to language too — Vega becomes Neilloan the mallee fowl, Sirius becomes Warepil the wedge-tailed eagle • Tap any figure for what it is, where to look, and what it was used for. Neilloan rising in March means the mallee fowl are building their nests; when it sets in October the eggs are ready to collect. Choose it under Layers → Sky Culture. The Greek sky remains the default. This is one nation's sky, not a pan-Indigenous one — there are hundreds of distinct First Nations traditions and they do not agree with each other, which is part of what makes them worth seeing.
