Point Backtick at a folder and start writing. Headings become headings, bold becomes bold, and the syntax markers step aside the moment you leave a line — then come straight back when your cursor returns. The plain text is always still there. You just stop having to read it.
A DAY WITH IT
Open the folder your notes live in; it stays in the sidebar with full-text search across all of it. Write without the syntax getting in the way, and press Space on any file to look inside without opening it. Drop in a formula or a diagram and watch it draw itself as you type. When it is done, read it back without the editor around it, or export a page that stands on its own. Then open Statistics and see what the week actually looked like.
WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT
• Live formatting — Markdown renders in place while you write. No split screen, no preview pane, no switching modes.
• Math and diagrams, natively — LaTeX and Mermaid render in the editor, in the reading view, and in what you export, all drawn on your Mac. Almost nothing else does that without shipping a browser inside the app.
• A folder, not a vault — your files stay ordinary .md files that any other app can open. Nothing is imported, nothing is converted.
• Export to HTML and PDF — self-contained, images and formulas embedded.
• Your files stay exactly as you wrote them — encoding, byte-order marks and Windows or classic Mac line endings all survive untouched, so nothing shows up as noise in version control.
NOTHING LEAVES YOUR MAC
No analytics, no telemetry, no account, no sign-in, and not a single network request. Backtick does hold macOS's network permission, but only because WebKit refuses to start without it and Backtick uses WebKit offscreen to draw Mermaid diagrams from a copy of the renderer inside the app — nothing is fetched and nothing is sent, and any network monitor will show you an idle app. Writing statistics are off until you switch them on, stay on your Mac, and can be deleted in one click. One honest consequence: images referenced by a web address are deliberately not loaded and appear as a placeholder. Images stored beside your document work normally.
