New in 1.2: tables, and 7 days of publishing free. Build tables in a grid, bring them in from Word, Markdown, or EPUB, and publish them as real tables.
Most writing tools hand you a manuscript and leave the book to someone else. FinePress is the other half. You write in it, and what you see is the page a reader gets, laid out as you type.
The editor is built out of blocks, so a paragraph, a heading, a pull quote, a verse stanza, a table and a code listing each know what they are and are set the way their kind should be set. A live preview sits beside the page and re-renders as you work, so the design is never a surprise at the end. Themes control the type, the leading, the chapter openers and the margins, and switching one restyles the whole book without touching a word of it.
Start from a template that matches what you are actually making. A novel opens with a classic chapter opener and indented paragraphs. A thesis comes with an abstract, numbered chapters, footnotes, a bibliography and an appendix. There are templates for non-fiction, academic papers, cookbooks, technical manuals and one-page documents, each with a structure and a theme that suit it.
Bring in what you have already written. FinePress imports EPUB, Word, PDF and plain text, and pulls pages straight from OneNote. Imports keep their structure rather than arriving as one long undifferentiated block, and the original file is never touched: an import becomes a new FinePress document and your source stays where it was.
Scholarly work is treated as a first-class case rather than an afterthought. The reference library reads CSL-JSON and connects to Zotero, citations insert at the cursor and render in your chosen style, and footnotes, glossaries and indexes are real structures the exporter understands. Equations have their own builder and palette. Code listings carry syntax coloring, a language picker, and on-board validation for the languages that support it.
An editor's notes belong in the book rather than in a separate document. Comments anchor to the words they mark and survive a round trip through Word, so a manuscript sent out for editing comes back with every note still attached to the sentence it was about. A note can carry a suggested replacement, which goes in when you accept it. Review sets the manuscript and its comments side by side for the pass.
Export produces EPUB that passes epubcheck, and PDF for print. Before it exports, FinePress audits the book against the accessibility rules that reading systems and EPUB Accessibility 1.1 actually enforce, and tells you which section needs attention rather than failing at a validator later. A publishing preflight runs the submission rules of Amazon KDP, Apple Books, Kobo and IngramSpark with each store's own numbers, so a description that is too long or an ISBN whose check digit does not add up is caught here instead of days later in a queue.
Your book is a file on your Mac. There is no account, no sync service and no telemetry of any kind. The optional AI assistance is bring-your-own-key: nothing reaches a model unless you supply your own credentials, and those are stored in your Keychain rather than in the app's preferences. Turn it off and FinePress never talks to anyone.
FinePress saves as you write, and keeps dated copies of the manuscript inside the document, so yesterday's wording is still there when you want it back, one chapter or the whole book. If a chapter ever loses its text, the version before it is kept and offered back to you.

Tables, and a free week of publishing.
Publishing now starts with a 7-day free trial. The first time you export an EPUB or a print PDF, FinePress offers seven days of EPUB, print PDF, and printing at no charge. After that, one purchase turns publishing on for good. It is not a subscription. Writing, the live preview, and Word and Markdown export stay free, as they always have. If you already unlocked publishing, or bought FinePress before it was free, nothing changes.
Put a table anywhere in a chapter from the Format menu, or press Option-Command-G. Type into a grid where Tab moves between cells and Return on the last row adds another. Each table has its own column alignment, an optional header row, a caption, and a choice of borders: clean rules, a full grid, or none.
Tables in Word, Markdown, and EPUB files now import as tables you can edit instead of arriving as flattened text, and Word and Markdown export write them back out as tables. A table with merged cells comes through exactly as it was.
In the finished book a table is real table markup that screen readers can navigate. In print the header row repeats when a table runs onto a new page, and rows never split across pages. The accessibility check before publishing points out any table that has no header row.
