BandBar measures your internet connection from the macOS menu bar. Click the icon, press Start Test, and it reports download speed, upload speed and ping latency in a single pass.
Here is exactly how each number is produced, so you can compare it against anything else you run:
Download is one HTTP stream from Cloudflare's public speed test endpoint, timed from the first byte to the last. Upload posts a payload to that same endpoint and is timed the same way. Ping sends an HTTP HEAD request to 1.1.1.1, to 8.8.8.8 and to Cloudflare's endpoint, then reports the fastest of the three round trips. Because the download runs as a single stream rather than several connections at once, BandBar can report a lower figure than tools that open many in parallel. Same link, different method.
The whole test is over in seconds. A progress bar and a running figure show you where it is while it works, and Cancel stops it mid-test if you change your mind.
BandBar also names what you are connected through: connection type (Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Cellular or Loopback), the network interface, your local IP address and your external IP address. A refresh button updates those at any time.
Every finished test joins a history list holding your ten most recent results, each with the time, download, upload and ping. The five newest are visible at a glance and older ones scroll. That list lives in memory and is gone when you quit.
The popover is the same size in every state, so it never jumps or resizes while a test is running.
What BandBar keeps: none of what you measure. There are no settings to configure, and test results are never written to disk. The only thing saved is a small set of counters and dates belonging to the rate-the-app prompt, so it knows when to ask you once. They never leave your Mac.
