Translate conversations live, right on your iPhone. Plus a Japanese dictionary, kanji lookup, videos with tappable captions, and image text. Sign in to sync your devices.
Look up Japanese words, kanji, readings, meanings, conjugations, and example sentences in one focused dictionary.
Search in Japanese, English, or romaji. Open detailed entries, explore kanji components and stroke order, hear Japanese pronunciation, and save private notes and recent searches.
Translate a conversation as it happens. Two people take turns speaking Japanese or English, with no language button to press: each sentence appears as it's spoken with its translation underneath, and the translation is read aloud when the speaker pauses. Listening translates Japanese from a TV, a guide, or announcements, and you can also translate typed text, PDFs, and photos. Speech recognition and translation run on your iPhone, so after a one-time download Translate works without a connection. Tap any Japanese word to look it up, bookmark sentences to replay later, and see how many of a conversation's words you already know.
Watch YouTube videos with their Japanese captions as cards below the player. The line being spoken is highlighted as the video plays, and tapping a word pauses the video and opens it in the dictionary. See how much of a video's vocabulary you already know, repeat a line, or slow it down.
Use handwriting to find a kanji you cannot type. Photograph or import Japanese text and read it as the photo, the photo with caption cards, the text alone, or a natural translation with notes on context and idioms. Tap any word to look it up, and keep image encounters with a word in your private Media Library.
Reading Aids can show a short meaning under each word you haven't marked known, and a translation under each line.
Zenbu Japanese works without an account, and has no ads or analytics. Sign in with Apple, Google, or an emailed code to keep your known words, lists, recent videos, and bookmarked sentences the same on all your devices; you can delete the account from the app. Your notes, images, and conversations stay on your iPhone, and the Player's video searches and playback go through YouTube.
Zenbu Japanese 2.0 is a big update.
• Translate: two people talk in Japanese and English, and each sentence is translated as it's spoken, right on your iPhone. Translate what you hear, type, or upload, too.
• Player: watch YouTube with tappable Japanese captions as cards below the video.
• Image Search: read a photo as text, with a natural translation and its idioms explained.
• Mark words Known, and save words to your own Lists.
• Reading Aids: short meanings under words you don't know yet, and translations under each line.
• An optional Zenbu account: sign in with Apple, Google, or an emailed code to sync known words, lists, recent videos, and bookmarked sentences across your devices.
