GRDN: Garden & Plant Care

Watering, frost & harvest

Frost on the way? Turn on frost alerts and GRDN tells you the evening before, while there is still time to cover the beds or bring the pots in. GRDN tells you what your garden needs today, and why. This is not a watering timer. GRDN reads the weather where you actually are, works out how much water your soil has lost since it last rained, and asks you to water only when the plants in that bed have genuinely run short — and how many gallons to give them. Rain due tomorrow means it waits, unless the soil is already close to empty. A greenhouse is not watered by the sky, so it does not wait. ONE JOB AT A TIME Today shows the day's work one job at a time: water the beans, pick the basil, pinch the suckers off the tomatoes. Check it off and the next one arrives. EVERY PLANT, WHERE IT ACTUALLY GROWS Set your garden up once — open ground, raised bed, pots, a self-watering planter, a cold frame, a greenhouse or a windowsill — and say which way it faces. A plant that lives somewhere else, like the pots of basil on the steps, can be set up on its own. These are not labels; they change the math. A pot dries faster than open ground, glass keeps the rain off, and a bed against a south-facing wall runs warmer and drier than one facing north. FROST, BEFORE IT HAPPENS GRDN knows what each plant can take and what the night is going to do, allowing for pots, glass and a warm wall. When those two do not match, the job goes on your list — and with frost alerts turned on, GRDN tells you the evening before the frost, while you can still cover the beds or bring the citrus in. One alert per garden per night, never a repeat. Frost dates: NASA POWER. HARVEST THAT MOVES WITH THE WEATHER Days-to-maturity on a seed packet assumes an average summer. For every vegetable, fruit and herb with a care guide, GRDN counts the warmth your plants have actually had, so a cold couple of weeks pushes the first picking back and a warm one pulls it forward. FIND THE PLANT, IN YOUR OWN LANGUAGE 41,468 plants, searchable by botanical name and by common name in twelve languages, all on your device and working with no signal at all. If a search finds nothing in your language, GRDN tries the botanical name and then other languages, and says so. The app itself speaks the same twelve languages, and you can switch the language of plant names inside the app, whatever your device is set to. LOOK ANY PLANT UP GRDN is a reference book as well as a to-do list. 435 plants carry a curated care guide: light, hardiness, spacing and water needs for each, and where they apply, when to sow, the soil warmth it needs, how to know it is ready, pruning and what to do with it in winter — with its sources listed at the bottom of the page. WHAT IS FREE One garden, ten plants, and the whole engine: real watering advice, real frost warnings, harvest dates, the full plant catalog, and the frost alert the evening before. If you keep a balcony and six pots, you never need to pay us anything. GRDN PRO Several gardens kept apart — a vegetable bed, a greenhouse and a windowsill as three places with three different needs — as many plants as you grow, and reminders for the routine work: watering, harvest and pruning, on the morning they are due. GRDN Pro is an auto-renewing subscription, by the month or by the year: $2.99 a month, or $19.99 a year after a one-month free trial for new subscribers. Prices vary by country; the App Store shows yours before you confirm. Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation. The subscription renews automatically unless canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, and the renewal is charged within those last 24 hours. Manage or cancel it in your Apple Account settings. If Pro lapses, you keep everything you have already recorded.
