Your webcam looks flat because the camera lifts its black floor. Lumen puts it back where it belongs, then hands the corrected picture to every app on your Mac.
Your Mac's camera makes you look flat, grey and slightly washed out. That is not your lighting and it is not your fault: the camera hands macOS an image with a raised black floor, so the darkest parts of the picture are never actually dark, and everything looks hazy.
Lumen fixes it after capture and sends the corrected picture to every app that takes a camera. Select "Lumen" as your camera in a video call and you are done.
FIVE LIVE CONTROLS
Exposure, in stops. Black point, which is the direct fix for that lifted floor. Contrast, saturation and temperature. Black point is its own control on purpose: pivoting contrast around mid-grey crushes your highlights while you try to rescue the shadows.
FIFTEEN BUILT-IN LOOKS
Corrective (Natural, Filmic, Punch, Soft) for when you want to look like yourself. Film (Portra, Fuji, Print Film, Bleach Bypass, Warm Film). Stylised (Teal & Orange, Golden Hour, Cool Shadows, Faded Film). Monochrome (Mono, Noir). All generated on the spot, with no files to download or manage.
YOUR OWN LUTS
Load any .cube 3D LUT with a strength slider to dial it back. Most film LUT packs you can download are built for log footage and will make an ordinary webcam look worse, not better, by lifting the black floor even further. Lumen detects those and tells you, instead of leaving you to wonder what went wrong.
SEE THE CORRECTION
A live preview with Graded, Original and Split modes, so you can judge the result rather than guess at it. If you have more than one camera, pick which one Lumen grades.
LIVES IN THE MENU BAR
No window, no Dock icon. Open the panel, set your picture, close it. Every app that opens a camera afterwards sees the graded version.
PRIVATE BY CONSTRUCTION
Lumen has no network access whatsoever. Your video is read from the camera, graded on the GPU, and handed straight to whichever app asked for a camera. Nothing is recorded, nothing is uploaded, there is no analytics and there are no accounts.
Works with the built-in camera on the Apple Studio Display and with any USB webcam. Requires macOS 14 or later.
Lumen works by installing a camera system extension, which macOS asks you to approve once, at System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions. Nothing else is required.
