JetPics — a small, fast viewer for people who just want to look at their photos and videos.
Double-click a photo in Finder and it's full screen right away: no window animation, no importing into a library, no waiting. Arrow keys page through the folder, Esc takes you back. That's the whole idea.
HIGH PERFORMANCE
• The photo is there the moment you open it — full screen, without the usual half-second animation
• Neighboring frames are decoded in advance, so paging never stutters
• Large images are scaled down to fit your screen instead of being unpacked into memory whole
VIDEO IN THE SAME PLACE AS PHOTOS
• Clips from your phone sit in the same grid, with a cover frame and duration
• They open in the same full-screen window: space pauses, "," and "." scrub, M mutes
• Arrow keys still page through the folder, so you can move on without taking a clip off pause
• The S key saves the current frame of a clip — the file lands next to the clip itself
• The info panel shows duration, frame size, frame rate, codec, bit rate, and audio tracks
TABS AND SIDE-BY-SIDE PANES
• ⌘T opens a new tab: each has its own folder, its own navigation history, and its own selection
• ⌘\ splits the window into side-by-side panes — two folders visible at once
• A tab can be dragged into the neighboring pane, and the divider between panes can be dragged with the mouse
• "Open in New Tab" and "Open Beside" are in the context menu of any folder
YOUR REAL FILE STRUCTURE
• The interface is your file structure: nothing is imported, indexed, or moved
• Folders of photos show a collage of what's inside
• Sort by name, date, or size; show hidden files if you like
• JPEG, HEIC, PNG, TIFF, GIF, WebP, and camera RAW are supported, along with MOV and MP4
ZOOM AND GESTURES
• Pinch on the trackpad, double-click, or +/− zooms up to 8×; 0 returns to fit
• A two-finger swipe pages through the folder, and the image follows your finger the way it does on a phone
• Swipe up to close the viewer, swipe down to see the photo's details
BUILT FOR THE KEYBOARD
• Arrows page, space and Enter open, Home and End jump to either end, Backspace goes up a folder
• I shows photo details over the image
• R and L rotate the view — handy if you physically turn your laptop on its side: vertical shots then fill the screen
• The same actions are on the Touch Bar
PHOTO DETAILS
Camera and lens, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length, capture date, dimensions, color profile, and coordinates — read straight from the file and shown in the sidebar or over the image.
PRIVACY COMES FIRST
• There isn't a single line of networking code in the app: nothing to send, nowhere to send it
• No analytics, no crash reporters, no third-party libraries
• Nothing about your photos ends up in system caches or shared folders
• With default settings, the app writes nothing to disk except its own preferences
• If you enable the preview cache, previews sit next to the photos themselves and are deleted along with them
• Original photos are never opened for writing — the app physically cannot modify a single file
Ratings & Reviews
- This app hasn’t received enough ratings or reviews to display an overview.
Photos are no longer only for looking at: you can sort through a shoot, file it away and tidy things up without leaving the app.
SELECTING AND DELETING
• Select in batches: ⌘-click adds and removes files, Shift selects a range, ⌘⇧ adds a range to the selection, ⌘A takes the whole folder, Esc clears it
• Shift with the arrow keys extends the selection from the keyboard
• ⌘⌫ sends the selection to the Trash — in the grid and in the full-screen viewer, where sorting usually happens
• After a deletion the selection moves to the next photo, and the viewer shows the next frame, closing only when the folder is empty
• ⌘Z undoes anything done to files: deleting brings them back from the Trash, moving returns them, copying removes the copies
FILING THINGS AWAY
• Drag onto a folder in the grid or straight into the neighbouring pane; hold ⌥ to copy instead
• "Move To" and "Copy To" in the context menu, listing the current folder's subfolders and any other folder
• "Move to the Other Pane" in one click when the window is split in two
• When a name is taken, the app asks: keep both, replace, or cancel. A replaced file goes to the Trash, and the whole thing is undone with a single ⌘Z
• A new folder with ⇧⌘N, the toolbar button or the context menu on empty space
• Renaming files and folders from the context menu
PROTECTED FILES
• A padlock on files and folders that cannot be changed: no write access, or the Finder "Locked" flag is set
• Deleting and moving are disabled for them, while copying still works — reading a protected photo is never forbidden
ORDER AND GROUPS
• Sorting by file kind, alongside name, date and size
• Grouping by kind, month or size, with group headings in both views
INFO PANEL
• It now belongs to a tab: read metadata in one, sort files in another. Closes with the × in its own header
• A "Checksum" section computes SHA-256 on request and copies it to the clipboard
SMALL THINGS
• Mounted volumes appear in and disappear from the sidebar on their own; removable ones have an eject button
• The list view alternates row backgrounds like Finder, and in a narrow pane the columns give way to the file name
• Going up a level selects the folder you came from and scrolls to it
• A deleted folder closes the tabs it was open in; a renamed one takes them along
