Shutter Actuations

Your camera's shutter count

Only for Mac

Mac

Connect a camera over USB, or drop a photo it took onto the window: the shutter count appears in about half a second. Every camera counts how often its shutter has fired, and that number is how much life it has left. Shutter Actuations reads it in about half a second, with no administrator password and nothing to install. Some bodies hand the count over as soon as you plug them in over USB. The rest stamp it into every photograph they take — for those, drop a raw file or a camera JPEG on the window. Which cameras fall where is behind the gear button. Worth knowing before you buy a used body, or sell your own. Entry-level shutters are rated for about 100,000 actuations, professional ones 400,000.
