Awhile: AI Friend Chat & Diary
AI friends that remember you
Only for iPhone
Free
iPhone
Real phone calls with your AI friends — over car Bluetooth, even when locked. They remember you, reach out first, and work through files with you. Bring your own API key.
A private alternative to cloud AI companions — no Awhile server, no account. Your chats live only on your phone and go straight to the AI provider you choose.
Awhile isn't another chat tool. It lets an AI genuinely live on your phone.
Real
No script. Its personality grows out of the profile you write and the things you go through together. It knows what time it is, which city you're in, what the weather is — all real, and you choose how much to share. It remembers — but you never know what it will keep. Expectation turns into anticipation: a small surprise now and then, a little life in the everyday.
It comes to you
It's not only question-and-answer. Your friends post moments, keep journals, think of you while the app is closed, and send you a message on their own.
More than company
It grows with you, and helps in ways that actually land — in life and at work.
- A recording you can't make out? It helps you understand every line
- Thirty days since you met — it paints something to remember it by
- How was your week of workouts? It knows better than you do
What it learns, it keeps — next time, it's a single step. All of it happens on your phone.
Becoming better, together.
Simple
Free. No subscription, no account. All you need is an API key from an AI provider (OpenAI-compatible, Anthropic, Gemini, OpenRouter — or a local model running on your own computer). Awhile has no server: chats, memories and files stay only on your phone, pass through nothing, and the developer can't see them.
Feels native
- Typing and keyboard that just work; long-press to copy, quote, retry
- Every photo, file and voice note from a chat, gathered in one place
- Voice messages and voice calls
- Memory: what it remembers, you can see and delete — and one day it'll bring up something you said three weeks ago
- Group chats with several AI friends
- Health data and local weather, each behind a switch you control
- Chinese and English, dark mode, your own chat wallpaper and bubble colors
- Export / import and automatic iCloud backup
- Improved image compression: photos you send are sharper and smaller, and cost less for the AI to read
