Termite Identifier: Swarm
Flying Ant Check, Shed Wing ID
Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Termite swarmer or flying ant? Photograph the insect — or just the shed wings on the windowsill — and get a straight answer, or an honest "not sure".
Termite swarmers mean a problem inside the walls. Flying ants mean nothing. Photograph the insect — or just the shed wings left on the windowsill — and get a straight answer in seconds, or an honest "not sure" when the photo can't carry one.
▸ TWO WAYS TO ASK
Most identifiers need an organism. A shed wing isn't one.
• The insect — photograph the swarmer itself, waist and antennae in frame
• Just the wings — lay two or three flat and photograph those alone, no insect needed
• Four equal wings means termite. Two unequal pairs means ant. The wings carry that on their own
▸ A STRAIGHT ANSWER, OR AN HONEST "NOT SURE"
Two independent vision models read your photo, and they have to agree.
• TERMITE, FLYING ANT or NOT SURE — never a coin flip
• See how each check decided — antennae, waist and wing shape, on your own photo
• NOT SURE tells you what to photograph next
• A scale reference is required before every check, because a 2 mm booklouse and a 10 mm termite swarmer look identical in a close-up
▸ WHAT AN INSPECTOR LOOKS FOR — ALWAYS FREE
One insect is one data point. Walk the house with the five signs that turn a maybe into a yes.
• Mud tubes on foundations, walls and joists
• Frass — gritty pellets like coarse sawdust
• Blistered paint with no water source
• Hollow-sounding wood at skirting and window frames
• Piles of shed wings on windowsills and near light fittings
Photograph and note each one. The checklist is never paywalled.
▸ SWARM CALENDAR FOR YOUR AREA
Termites fly on a schedule. Enter a ZIP code and know yours.
• Species windows — eastern subterranean Apr–May, dark southeastern Jun, light southeastern Jul–Sep, Formosan May at night, drywood Sep–Nov
• Your local termite pressure zone, and what it means
• One notification about a week before your window opens
▸ WHAT THIS IS NOT
An identification aid, not an inspection. A TERMITE or NOT SURE result is a reason to call a licensed inspector, and the app links you to one. Your photo is processed in the cloud and deleted as soon as the answer comes back.
▸ FREE AND PREMIUM
Three identifications free, forever. The checklist, the swarm calendar and the safety guidance are free and always will be. Premium unlocks unlimited identifications and your full scan history.
