GlutenTrace: Gluten Scanner
Scan labels for hidden gluten

Now reads ingredient lists straight from the package, on your phone — so you get an answer even for products no database has yet.
GlutenTrace reads the ingredient list and tells you what is actually there — including what it cannot be sure about.
Scan a barcode, or photograph the ingredient list itself. Your phone reads the label using Apple's built-in text recognition, so you get an answer even for products no database has yet.
WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT
Most gluten apps give you a green tick or a red cross. Real labels are rarely that simple.
"May contain traces" is a voluntary warning. There is no legal threshold behind it, and manufacturers choose whether to print it at all. Researchers have measured gluten above 20 ppm in roughly the same share of products carrying the warning as those without it.
So we never show it as a flat red. We tell you what that line can and cannot tell you — and we word it differently depending on whether you have coeliac disease, a wheat allergy, or gluten sensitivity, because the advice genuinely differs.
We also tell you when we are not sure. Unqualified "starch", "flavouring", "caramel colour" and yeast extract can all carry gluten without the label resolving it. Other apps stay silent about these. We name them.
HOW IT WORKS
• Scan a barcode to look the product up
• Or photograph the ingredient list — read on your phone, not on a server
• Gluten sources are marked in the ingredient text, so you can see them yourself
• Set your condition once: coeliac, wheat allergy, or sensitivity
ALWAYS FREE
• Unlimited scanning, barcodes and ingredient lists
• The safety verdict, and the reasoning behind it
• Which ingredient is the gluten source
• Your own list of products, shareable with whoever does the shopping
• No account, no ads, no data selling
GlutenTrace Pro adds the full ingredient list with gluten marked in red, a product photo whenever the database has one, how old the data is, unlimited history, every article, and restaurant cards in six languages for travelling. It supports a family-run project instead of advertising.
WHO IS BEHIND IT
GlutenTrace is built by the family behind Renmel (renmel.dk), a Danish site about coeliac disease. The articles in the app are ours, built on published research, with the disagreements left in rather than smoothed over.
IMPORTANT
GlutenTrace is an informational tool, not medical advice. Ingredient data can be incomplete or out of date, and manufacturers change recipes. Always check the packaging yourself — especially if your reaction is severe.

Answers, even when the database doesn't
Open Food Facts is sometimes slow or down. The app now also asks our own database: products other readers sent in, and that we checked against their photo, can always be looked up. And on a weak signal, the app no longer hangs for minutes.
Scan the barcode when you send in a product
No more typing 13 digits off a curved package. Tap the barcode button and your phone fills in the number. One swapped digit used to be enough to file a correct ingredient list under the wrong product.
Recipes change - now the app says so
Answers built on a package another reader scanned now show when it was read. If that was more than six months ago, you no longer get a green answer, but a nudge to read the package yourself. And if the answer doesn't match the package in your hand, tap "Doesn't match the package?" and we hide the old answer until we have looked at it.
Your photo, your choice
When you photograph a product's ingredient list yourself, the photo is now only sent to us if you tap "Share this reading". It used to be sent automatically. This is now how our privacy policy always said it would be.
More accurate answers
"May contain traces of gluten" is now caught even when the warning names gluten rather than a specific grain. Oats labelled gluten-free no longer get a wrong red answer. The app also reads Romanian ingredient lists.
