Eight flat kilometres and eight up Scafell Pike are the same number and nothing alike. This one measures the climb, and gives your grid reference when it matters. Peaks and Paths is for walking in hills, not round a park. THE CLIMB Eight flat kilometres along a canal and eight up Scafell Pike are the same number and nothing alike, and the whole difference is in the ascent. So every walk is broken down by gradient — level, rising, climbing, descending — with the seconds and the metres in each, the cumulative ascent and descent, the highest point reached, and a Naismith's-rule estimate held up against the time it actually took. WHERE YOU ARE, IN THE FORM SOMEBODY ASKS FOR IT A six-figure British National Grid reference with its square letters, beside decimal latitude and longitude, with accuracy and altitude and a button to copy it. It is worked out on the phone with no network involved. Outside Great Britain it shows degrees instead. Beside it: who you left word with, where you said you were going, when you are due back, and a button to call them. The emergency numbers, and the reminder that texting 999 has to be registered before the day you need it. And a distress signal that flashes the torch six times a minute, the rhythm somebody looking for you is taught to watch for. FIRST AID Twenty-nine topics for walking and wilderness — hypothermia first, because it is the one that kills walkers in this country and because the traditional answers to it are actively harmful. Every topic says what it looks like, what to do, and what not to do. Grouped, searchable, and clear throughout that it is guidance and not a substitute for 999. TRACKING A WALK The route draws itself as you go. It keeps measuring with the phone locked or in your pocket, and stops the moment you finish. Six one-tap marks for what happened — summit, viewpoint, hazard, gate, water, rest — plus notes typed or spoken aloud, each pinned to where you were standing. It pauses itself when you stop and picks up again when you move. COMPASS AND WATER A compass card with your grid reference, latitude and longitude, altitude and accuracy round it, the back bearing, and a bearing to follow that says which way to turn. It can show the nearest postcode too, looked up through Apple only if you choose. And a reminder to drink while you walk, on the interval you set, with the phone in your pocket. PLANNING, AND KEEPING IT Plan a walk — where, when, how hard, and who you have told — and it sits on the dashboard until the day. Afterwards it joins the record: every walk you have done, with its climb and its gradient breakdown, its photographs, and its notes. WHERE YOUR DATA LIVES On the phone. The walks, the photographs, the notes and the planned walks are in the app's own storage and are never uploaded, and nor is your position: a postcode lookup you ask for goes to Apple, not us. There is no advertising, no analytics and no tracking. A few things go to our own server, and only when you use the feature that needs them: your email address if you sign in or claim access you have been given; a notification token, with the phone model and app version, if you switch notifications on; and a random install ID that lets an App Store purchase be matched to you. None of it is shared or sold. A PIN lock if you want one, light and dark, miles or kilometres, metres or feet. SUBSCRIPTION A Peaks and Paths subscription unlocks the subscriber features. Two lengths: Monthly (one month) and Quarterly (three months). New subscribers get the first month free; the trial becomes a paid subscription unless it is cancelled at least 24 hours before it ends. The price is shown in the app before anything is bought, and varies by country. A subscription renews automatically at the end of each period unless it is cancelled at least 24 hours before that period ends. Manage or cancel it from the Manage subscription button in the app, or in your App Store account settings; cancelling stops the next renewal and leaves the current period running.
