Manage all your drives from the menu bar. Track down large files across drives and round them up for cleanup — they go to the Trash, never deleted outright.
DriveChief puts drive management, storage analysis, and diagnostics right in your menu bar. Track down large files across your drives, gather what you want gone in one place, and move it to the Trash when you’re ready — not before.
Compare scans, get to the bottom of drive problems, and stop external hard disks from dozing off.
At a glance:
• Drives – See how much space is used, what kind of drive it is, and how it’s connected. Open drives, peek into their Trash, or eject one or all of them.
• Storage – Browse the biggest folders, see how old your data is, and spot what’s changed since the last scan.
• Search & Collector – Search across drives, collect what you find in one place, and send it to the Trash drive by drive.
• Diagnostics & History – Sixteen checks, a speed test, and 30 days of drive events.
• Drive Profiles – Details and the latest scan stick around even when a drive isn’t plugged in.
• Convenience – Connect network shares automatically, and keep your Mac or your hard disks awake when you need to.
See what’s eating up your drive, three ways. Usage shows the biggest folders — click one to dig a level deeper. Age groups the same data by when it was last changed, so you can see how much space has been sitting there untouched for years. Changes compares two scans and shows which folders grew, what’s new, and what’s gone.
Find it, no matter which drive it’s on. Just describe what you’re after in plain English — “largest videos over 1 GB”, say. DriveChief turns that into filters you can see and tweak, then searches the drives you’ve picked. You can include saved scans of drives that aren’t connected right now (the scan date is shown); those only hold the big folders and files, not every last one. If you like, an on-device language model can help figure out the file type — but its suggestion only kicks in once you’ve confirmed it. Your search never leaves your Mac, and it works fine without Apple Intelligence too.
Collect first, clean up when you’re ready. Add results from search and the storage view to a single collector. DriveChief shows you the total, groups everything by drive, and the storage view instantly redraws as if those items were already gone. Nothing actually moves while you’re collecting. When you’re ready, send each drive’s selection to that drive’s own Trash — the button tells you which drive. Changed your mind on something? Individual items can still be restored.
When a drive is acting up: sixteen checks. They narrow down what might be wrong — power settings, third-party drivers, a daisy chain of three hubs, or a connection that’s negotiated a slower speed today than usual. Every finding says where it got its information, and many come with a suggested fix. If a source isn’t available, the check says so rather than handing you an all-clear it can’t back up.
A profile for every drive. Type, file system, encryption, connection path, and the last scan stay on record — even while the drive is disconnected — along with the last day you had it on your Mac. On top of that, thirty days of history track when a drive had to spin up and when one was yanked out without being ejected first.
External hard disks stay awake. Hard disks in enclosures nod off on their own firmware timer, which the macOS “Put hard disks to sleep” setting can’t touch — so the next time you access one, you’re waiting five to twenty-five seconds for it to spin up. DriveChief writes a tiny file during quiet moments to keep that from happening. It’s one switch per drive, and you can measure how long your enclosure really takes. Not available for SSDs.
Login details for network shares stay in the macOS Keychain.
Available in German and English. Runs on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
