Convert BMP, PNG, JPG, GIF and IFF (Amiga ILBM) to Atari ST Degas, NeoChrome and Spectrum 512, and back. Edit ST/STE palettes, drop to convert, save STOS-ready PI1.
ST Image Converter turns modern pictures into Atari ST compatible images and can bring classic ST pictures back onto your Mac. Drop a BMP,PNG, JPG, GIF, Degas, NeoChrome, Amiga IFF (ILBM) or Spectrum 512 file onto the window. Choose what you want to save from the Format menu. The preview updates at once, using real ST or STE colours.
This is for Homebrew authors, STOS programmers, demoscene artists, and anyone restoring or sharing Atari ST graphics. Files are written the way the ST expects: Degas bitplanes, 8.3 names, and palettes that load the right way up in Hatari and on real hardware.
Convert:
• PNG, JPG, and GIF — modern images in either direction. Animated GIFs use the first frame.
• Degas Elite — PI1/PC1 (320×200, 16 colours), PI2/PC2 (640×200, 4 colours), PI3/PC3 (640×400, 2 colours). Uncompressed PI files for STOS LOAD; compressed PC files for Degas Elite.
• NeoChrome — NEO pictures at 320×200 with 16 colours and a 128-byte header, using the same low-resolution bitplanes as PI1.
• Spectrum 512 — uncompressed SPU or compressed SPC. Each scanline has three 16-colour palettes (48 colours a line). The first scanline is unused, as on the ST.
• Amiga Deluxe Paint IFF - convert to and from IBLM images.
Colours that match the hardware!
Choose ST (512 colours, 3 bits per channel) or STE (4096 colours, 4 bits per channel). Changing this reconverts a loaded picture, or reinterprets the palette words already stored in a Degas, NeoChrome, or Spectrum 512 file.
On Degas and NeoChrome pictures, click a swatch under the preview to pick a legal hardware colour. Index 0 is the STOS background and border. The last 10 palettes you used appear below; click one to rematch every pixel, or Restore Original to return to the conversion. Spectrum 512 swatches are shown for reference and cannot be edited.
STOS Ready.
Uncompressed PI1 files match STOS screen memory. Reserve a screen bank, LOAD the picture, then GET PALETTE:
10 reserve as screen 7 20 load "NAME.PI1",7 30 get palette (7) 40 appear 7
Type default afterwards to restore the STOS editor. NeoChrome and Spectrum 512 are separate formats — use uncompressed PI1 with LOAD.
Ease of use!
Open with a drop, a click, or File → Open (⌘O). Save with File → Save (⌘S). Degas, NeoChrome, and Spectrum 512 names use the Atari 8.3 form. Built-in help explains each format. The app follows your Mac language, or you can choose English, French, or German in Settings.
