A CURRICULUM, NOT A PILE OF DRILLS
112 stages across 11 chapters, in a deliberate order — from finding the tonic,
through the perfect intervals, major versus minor, the triad family, the seven
scale degrees, modes, seventh chords, cadences, and finally Free Field, where
there is no key centre, the root is random, and the clock is running.
Difficulty does not just mean "more items". Tonestep measures how easily two
sounds are confused, so a stage asking you to separate a perfect fifth from a
perfect fourth is correctly harder than one mixing a fifth with a minor second —
even though both have two options.
FIFTEEN TRAINING MODULES
Intervals, chords, scales, functional ear, chord progressions, chord inversions,
rhythm, melodic dictation, note identification, relative pitch, absolute pitch,
interval comparison, error detection, jazz chords, and singing practice with live
pitch detection through your microphone.
IT REMEMBERS WHAT YOU FIND HARD
Every answer feeds a spaced repetition engine that schedules the things you keep
missing to come back exactly when you are about to forget them. Your daily
session is built from what you are weakest at, not from a random shuffle.

Connect a MIDI keyboard, or use the on-screen one, and play through a piece while
Tonestep judges your timing note by note.
