Open a Markdown file and it is already rendered. Mermaid diagrams, LaTeX
math and syntax highlighting, all on your Mac. No account, no network, no
subscription.
MDView opens a Markdown file the way Preview opens a PDF: double-click, and the document is already rendered.
It is built for people who read a lot of Markdown — READMEs, specs, design docs, meeting notes — and want it to look right without launching a workspace, creating a vault, or signing into anything.
FAST On an Apple silicon Mac, a cold launch takes just over half a second and the next document opens in about 45 milliseconds, because the renderer stays warm in the background.
RENDERS WHAT YOU ACTUALLY WRITE • CommonMark, plus tables, task lists, footnotes and strikethrough • Syntax highlighting for Swift, Python, TypeScript, Rust, Go, SQL and 30 more • Mermaid diagrams, drawn from the code fence • LaTeX math, inline and display Diagrams and equations are drawn on your Mac. Nothing is sent anywhere.
CSV FILES TOO Open a .csv and it becomes a readable grid: headers from the first row, numeric columns right-aligned, columns you can resize. Correct a cell in place, add or delete rows and columns, then press Command-S — CSV files are not autosaved, deliberately, because a stray keystroke in a grid is hard to notice. A row you did not edit is written back byte for byte, so a one-cell change stays a one-line diff, which matters when your data files live in version control. Large files open instantly, because rows are read only as they are drawn.
HELP WRITING MARKDOWN A Format menu with the shortcuts already in your fingers: Command-B for bold, Command-I for italic, Command-K for a link. Headings, bullet and numbered lists, quotes, inline code, fenced code blocks, tables and horizontal rules are all one command away. Pressing bold twice removes it again, and switching a bullet list to a numbered one replaces the marker instead of stacking it.
READ FIRST, EDIT WHEN YOU WANT Documents open as a clean rendered page, with no editor in the way. Press Option-Command-Return and the Markdown source appears beside the preview, scrolling in step with it. Edits show up in the preview as you type, and save themselves in place.
A FIND THAT TELLS THE TRUTH Command-F searches the rendered page and the source separately, because the two genuinely contain different text: asterisks exist only in the source, and an escaped ampersand only in the rendering. When the counts differ, the bar shows both, so a search never quietly misses something you can see. Case, whole-word and regular-expression options are included.
PRINT, PDF AND RICH TEXT Export a self-contained PDF, print, or copy the whole document as rich text and paste it into Mail, Pages or Keynote — with diagrams and equations carried across as images.
STAYS OUT OF THE WAY • Live reload when another app changes the file, never over unsaved work • Open Recent, Revert To, Duplicate — the standard macOS document behaviours • Light and dark, following the system
PRIVATE BY CONSTRUCTION MDView makes no network connections. There is no account, no sync, no telemetry, no analytics and no crash reporting. It is sandboxed: it reads the files you open and the folders you explicitly allow, and nothing else.
NOT IN THIS VERSION Quick Look previews, find-and-replace, and sorting or filtering CSV columns are not here yet.
One purchase, no subscription. Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later.
