Duplicate finders match on checksums, or on name and size — which only works when two files are byte-for-byte identical. DejaView compares the pictures instead. Duplicate finders match on checksums, or on name and size. That only works when two files are byte-for-byte identical. DejaView compares the pictures instead. The difference decides whether you find anything at all. A 1080p film and the 720p copy you made of it share no bytes — not one. To a checksum they are two unrelated files. They are the same movie, and matching on bytes walks straight past them. DejaView reduces each video to a fingerprint across its whole timeline, then looks for one file's footage inside another's — at any resolution, whatever it was encoded with, and even when the two copies start at different moments. WHAT CHECKSUM MATCHING MISSES • The same film at 480p, 720p, 1080p and 4K, sitting in four folders • Re-encodes — H.264, HEVC, different bitrate, different container • A copy with an intro card or black at the front • A trimmed copy that starts partway in • Letterboxed and pillarboxed versions • Copies carrying a watermark or a channel logo • Files whose names have nothing whatsoever in common Byte-identical copies are found too, instantly and without decoding anything — that part is table stakes. Everything above is the reason this app exists. SEE IT BEFORE YOU DELETE IT No duplicate finder should ask you to take its word for it. Open any group and every copy is shown at the same moment of the footage, with its measured time offset applied — so the trimmed copy and the padded copy line up on screen. If the pictures match, the group is right. You are deciding with your eyes, not trusting a percentage. IT KNOWS WHICH COPY IS ACTUALLY BETTER Resolution lies. A 480p file upscaled to 1080p has four times the pixels and none of the detail, and a tool that ranks by pixel count will keep exactly the wrong file. DejaView measures real picture detail from the frames themselves, so an upscale is flagged and demoted no matter how large it claims to be. Prefer the sharpest copy, or target a specific resolution when a smaller one is what you actually want. Identical copies are settled by your own folder priority. NOTHING IS EVER ERASED Removals go to the Trash, where macOS lets you put them back, or to a quarantine folder beside the original if you prefer. Every removal is written to a log first. One copy in each group is always kept and is never ticked for you. Automatic removal is off by default, capped, and refuses any group where the evidence is thin. BUILT FOR LIBRARIES THAT ARE ACTUALLY LARGE Results appear as they are found, not at the end. A scan can be paused — including across quitting the app — and picks up where it stopped rather than starting over. Every video it has fingerprinted stays remembered by content rather than by location, so a copy of a file you scanned last year is recognised the moment it appears, under any name in any folder. PRIVATE BY CONSTRUCTION No account. No analytics. Nothing collected. The app ships without the network entitlement, so macOS itself prevents it from connecting anywhere — this is enforced by the system, not just promised here. WHAT IT DOES NOT DO Straight about the limits, because a tool that deletes files should not surprise you. • FORMATS. DejaView decodes through macOS, so it reads MP4, M4V, MOV and other QuickTime-compatible files. Matroska (.mkv), Windows Media (.wmv) and most AVI cannot be opened by macOS at all — not a codec problem, a container one. Those files are still checked for byte-identical copies, but cannot be compared by picture. If your library is mostly MKV, this matters. • It never matches on filenames. Similar names are not treated as evidence of anything. • Copies starting more than ten minutes apart are not matched by default; the window is adjustable. • Files under 1 MB, shorter than 4 seconds, and iCloud files not downloaded to this Mac are skipped. All three are adjustable. • It does not convert, re-encode or edit anything. It finds and removes; that is all. • Video only. Not photos, music or documents.
