Beresta: Library & Highlights

Ebook reader for Obsidian

$19.99 · In‑App Purchases

Beresta keeps what you read and what you took from it: books, articles, highlights — and the notes they turn into. BOOKS STAY FILES Opens EPUB, FB2, PDF, MOBI and plain text. Importing copies: the file you brought stays where it was. Any book comes back out as a file under its real name through Share; on the Mac, "Save a copy of the library…" lays the whole library out as Author/Title folders. A book may hold several files at once — the reader picks the one that reads best, and you can pick another by hand. HIGHLIGHTS YOU CAN TAKE WITH YOU A quote, your own thought beside it, tags, bookmarks. On iPad, ink over PDF pages with Apple Pencil. All of it exports into an Obsidian vault as ordinary Markdown files rather than "our format": a person edits the note, not the program, and the next export will not overwrite what you wrote. There is a separate Obsidian plugin, open source. SYNC WITHOUT SOMEONE ELSE'S SERVER Beresta has no server of its own and no account. Devices exchange through a place you choose. To Backblaze B2 and WebDAV everything travels sealed: the key is derived from your passphrase on the device itself and stays with you. Through a folder — your own, a shared one, or one inside iCloud Drive — the files travel as they are: there the storage protects them, not Beresta, so pick a folder you trust. A LIBRARY, NOT A FILE LIST Authors, series, tags, nested shelves. Search by title and author everywhere; search inside the book you are reading, too; full-text search across the whole library on the Mac. Reading statuses and a reading log. On the Mac, import from Calibre brings covers and your own highlights along, and import from Zotero brings articles and notes. ARTICLES FROM THE WEB RSS subscriptions deliver articles straight into the library and store them the way books are stored: text, images and the original source. On the Mac a page can be clipped with the Safari extension — it ships inside the app, nothing to install. ON ALL YOUR DEVICES One purchase covers Mac, iPhone and iPad. Widgets: continue reading, and quote of the day. A nearby device offers to continue the book you started; if that is too much, one switch in settings turns it off. WHAT BERESTA DOES NOT DO No account. No analytics, no telemetry, and nothing leaves your device on its own. If something goes wrong, "Diagnostics" in Settings builds a report, shows it to you in full before anything is sent, and you decide whether to send it at all. No ads. It does not decide for you where your books live. Keeping your own files is not about distrusting clouds. It is about libraries taking years to build, and apps living shorter lives than that. A year of updates is included. After that you can extend for new features — or stay with what you bought: the app keeps working.

  • This app hasn’t received enough ratings or reviews to display an overview.

Full-screen images, grouped settings, a review on the book card and new footnotes You can now open a picture in a book full screen: tap it and a viewer opens over the reader, where you pinch to zoom and drag the image with your finger, and a double tap switches between Fit to Window and Actual Size. Settings on iPhone and iPad are now grouped: Appearance & Reading, Library & Sources, Sync & Obsidian, Service. On iPhone each section has its own icon and its own screen; on iPad the sections sit in a column on the left with their content on the right, and there is a single Done button, above the content. The book card now has a review: under How I read it there is Write a review, and you can change the text, paragraphs and all, at any time with Edit review. You can write a review at any stage of reading, not only once you finish: while a book is in progress it goes with the current reading. A footnote now opens as a card in the page’s own colors: a border and a hard shadow in the text color, a Footnote label on top, and buttons as underlined words. On Sepia, Night and the theme’s page, the footnote card matches the page. Settings, Reading statistics, the book card (with the sheet bar on iPad), the highlights feed, reading lists, Golden shelf, To Find, the Antilibrary, catalogs, New Record, Vocabulary and Details from the Web now take the theme’s colors, and Next in Daily Review is filled with the theme’s accent. When the page uses the theme’s colors, the reader’s top and bottom bars do too: in dark Galley they are no longer grey over the page. Also in this build. On a large screen a PDF now zooms in further: the zoom limit is counted from fit-to-width instead of being fixed at four times. In Details from the Web, a PDF without an ISBN now takes the number from the book’s own pages — its imprint — and says so. About now links to the user chat on Telegram. Junk titles and authors from a file’s metadata no longer reach the shelf: “16+”, “test”, “Microsoft Word - …”, “Download book …” and the like. Tags such as “(Z-Library)” are stripped, and a junk title is replaced with the file name. In a PDF, “Ivanov, Petrov” in the author field is two authors, not “Petrov Ivanov”. An open book card notices when a file arrives through sync: the file row with its buttons appears at once, with no need to reopen the card. Set up syncing in an empty library opens Settings right at the sync section, as on the Mac. Sync: when a server keeps limiting requests even after the pause, as Koofr did, Beresta suggests quitting it for an hour or connecting from another network. Check storage does not go online during a pause and says until what time it is waiting. Export to Obsidian now also takes a book with no highlights if it has a review, a rating or a note about the book. The review and rating of your reading travel with the book. The Calibre rating is no longer exported: a book rated only in Calibre will have no rating in the export.
