The two-second check that stops a video playing through your speakers in a quiet room. One shortcut, a chime on the headphones you chose, or a clear reason why not. You know the sound. A video starts playing through the built-in speakers in a quiet room, and everyone looks up. Out Loud is the two-second check that stops it happening. Press Command-Shift-H. If your Mac's current output is a device you approved, you hear a soft 620-millisecond chime on that exact device. If it is not, you hear nothing at all, and a small notice tells you why. WHY THE SILENCE MATTERS Most audio testers play a sound through whatever the system happens to be using, which is the one thing you cannot trust. If the route already slipped to the built-in speakers, a test tone simply plays out loud — the exact thing you were checking for. Out Loud binds playback to the specific device it verified and refuses to fall back to anything else. Silence here is a real answer, never a failure to communicate: you always get a written reason. YOU DECIDE WHAT MAY PLAY Open Allowed Audio Sources and choose the outputs allowed to sound the chime. Bluetooth headphones are remembered by their hardware address, so renaming them — or naming them a single emoji — never loses the selection. USB and other wired outputs can be added deliberately. Virtual and aggregate devices are excluded, because their stable names can hide forwarding to your speakers. You can allow your speakers if you want the chime there; it simply never happens by accident. VERIFIED, NOT GUESSED A matching device name proves nothing. Out Loud checks the Bluetooth address of the audio device against the list of devices this Mac has already paired, then rechecks the route immediately before playing and continuously while playing. Change your output in the middle of a check and playback stops instead of moving somewhere you did not intend. QUIET BY DESIGN - Lives in the menu bar. No Dock icon and no window in your way. - Three shortcut presets: Command-Shift-H, Command-Option-H, Control-Option-Command-H. - Optional Launch at Login. - Never switches your output, connects a device, or changes any volume. - A read-only diagnostics command for when you want the full picture. PRIVACY No account, no network, no analytics, no microphone. Out Loud reads the audio devices and the already-paired Bluetooth list on this Mac, and nothing else. It never scans for nearby devices, never pairs or connects anything, and never sends data anywhere. Requires macOS 13 or later.
