Omatsuri Nihongo
Hiragana, Kanji & Stories
Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Japanese and Math, each by age from 2. Tests go from Level 1 to 100 with a new title every 10 levels. Plus three questions a day and Everyone's Levels.
A Japanese reading and early-math app for Japanese-speaking families outside Japan.
Built in New York for our own family. Saturday-school homework doesn't stick, and the workbooks sold in Japan assume a child who already hears Japanese all day. This fills the gap between them.
JAPANESE AND MATH, EACH BY AGE
The top of the Home screen switches between Japanese and Math. Math never appears inside the Japanese streets.
Japanese
2-3 Look at a picture, pick its first sound
4-5 Arrange letters into words / shiritori / opposites / katakana spelling
6+ Grade-1 kanji readings, katakana words, stroke order
7+ Grade-2 kanji, stroke order, kanji inside words
Math
2-3 Count pictures / hear a number, pick the digit
4-5 Addition and subtraction within 10 / reading the hour
6+ Carrying and borrowing / clocks / word problems
7+ Multiplication, division, times-table ring toss, word problems
Siblings share one device. Each name keeps its own record.
PICTURE BOOKS YOU READ YOURSELF
Three folk tales. There is no narration, on purpose: if a child can hear the story, there is no reason to look at the letters. One line at a time is framed; tap it when you have read it and the frame moves down.
TESTS FROM LEVEL 1 TO 100
A Japanese test and a Math test, each from Level 1 to 100. Pass with 8 out of 10 to go up one level; failing never lowers your level. A new title every 10 levels. Missed questions go to a review queue and come back in the next test.
KEEPING GOING
Three questions a day with a weekly stamp card, parent-set goals with a reward coupon, a progress map with study time, and Everyone's Levels (only if a parent opts in).
WHAT WE DECIDED
- 126 illustrations drawn for this app in a single style
- No English and no romaji on the game screens
- The wrong-answer sound is two soft descending notes, never a buzzer
- Wrong choices are built from the mistakes children really make (forgetting to carry, mixing up シ and ツ)
- Kanji are shown in a textbook typeface
WHAT WE COLLECT
- No account. Learning records stay on the device
- Everyone's Levels sends a nickname picked from a preset list, an animal avatar and the two levels, and only if a parent chooses to join. There is no free-text input
- No ads, no third-party analytics
- The app is free
