Most lawyers do not lose billable hours because they work too little. They lose
them because at six o'clock nobody can remember what happened at eleven.
Hourwise is a quiet Mac app that keeps the record for you. There is no timer to
start and none to forget. It notices which application you are working in and
for how long, builds your day into blocks, and hands you the list. You say which
matter each block belongs to. It writes the invoice.
A day usually takes about a minute to review.
WHAT IT DOES
• Records automatically. Hourwise runs in the menu bar and keeps a running total
of the day. No buttons, no timers, nothing to remember.
• Catches the time you spend away from the Mac. Come back from a call, a
hearing, or a meeting and Hourwise asks what that gap was. One click bills it.
This is the time most trackers throw away entirely.
• Turns reviewed time into an invoice. Pick a client and a date range. Rates
resolve from the matter, then the client default. Increments round to your
client's rule — six minutes, fifteen, or none.
• Exports the way your client bills. PDF, CSV, QuickBooks CSV, Xero CSV, Excel,
and LEDES 1998B for e-billing vendors. Invoices lay out for A4 or US Letter,
carry your firm's address and tax registration number, and use your own
currency.
• Learns as you correct it. Every assignment trains a model that runs entirely
on your Mac, so repeated patterns start filling themselves in.
• Bills the hours the Mac never saw. Court, a client meeting, a site visit —
Hourwise reads your calendar, finds the events nothing was tracked against,
and turns the ones you choose into billable time. A meeting titled with a
client or matter name fills its matter in for you.
• Prints the way to pay on every invoice. Add your own payment page — Stripe,
PayPal, LawPay, your bank — and it appears on the PDF as a link and a QR
code. Hourwise never touches the money and never sees a payment.
• Chases what is owed. Sent invoices are aged by how far past due they are, and
an overdue one drafts a reminder in your own mail app, in your own words.
• Rules for the things you already know. "Everything in this app is always that
matter" — set once, applied forever.
• Shows you what the practice is actually earning. Billable hours a day,
realisation and collection, measured against the published law firm averages,
plus unbilled work sorted by how long it has been waiting.
• Keeps a running total of what it has recovered for you: time it found that
you would otherwise have lost, and have since put on a bill.
PRIVACY, PLAINLY
Hourwise has no account and no server, because there is nowhere for your data to
go. Everything lives in a single file on your Mac.
• It records which app was in front and for how long. It cannot see the contents
of any document, email, or message. It takes no screenshots. It does not read
your keystrokes or your clipboard.
• Pause tracking from the menu bar whenever you like.
• Mark any app private and it is never recorded at all.
• Your data is never uploaded, never sold, never analysed. There is no analytics
in this app.

Invoices
• Line items now always add up to the invoice total, and amounts round correctly for each currency.
• An invoice can no longer mix two currencies.
• LEDES 1998B line totals now match the invoice total.
• Invoice numbers continue correctly after you restore a backup on a new Mac.
Your time
• Hourwise no longer assigns a block to a matter on thin evidence. If it isn't sure, it leaves the block for you.
• Importing from Calendar again can no longer bill the same meeting twice.
• Quitting no longer loses the last few seconds of tracked time, and opening a second copy of Hourwise no longer counts every hour twice.
• When you mark an app private, Hourwise now offers to remove the time it had already recorded for it.
Your data
• Restore now checks that a backup is valid before using it, and keeps your current database instead of overwriting it.
• Back Up Now no longer removes your previous backup before the new one is safely written.
• Backups now include your firm details, invoice numbering and private apps.
• Removing the sample data no longer touches time you recorded on a sample matter.
• If an older version of Hourwise opens a newer database, it asks you to update and changes nothing.
Privacy and plan
• The lock now turns back on when your Mac sleeps, its screen locks or you switch users.
• Subscribers whose payment Apple is still retrying keep Pro during the grace period.
• The free trial is only offered to people who are still eligible for it.
