Michi - Japan Tolls & Passes

Buy a pass or pay the tolls?

Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.

Renting a car in Japan? Before you pick it up, you have to decide whether to add a regional expressway pass. Guess wrong and a week of driving can cost thousands of yen more than it should. Michi works it out from your actual route. THE VERDICT FIRST Plan your days and stops, then tap "Calculate tolls". Michi tells you, in the largest type on the screen, whether to buy a pass or skip it, and how much you save either way. • The ledger behind it: pay-as-you-go tolls, the pass price, the tolls a pass does not cover, and the total with the pass. • Every pass that fits your trip, cheapest first, with what each one saves or costs you. • A link to the official page for the pass it recommends. PASSES COVERED • Hokkaido Expressway Pass • Tohoku Expressway Pass • Kyushu Expressway Pass • San'in-Setouchi-Shikoku Expressway Pass If your trip is outside all four regions, Michi says so, which is a different answer from a pass that exists but does not pay off. TOLLS FROM THE ROADS YOU ACTUALLY DRIVE Michi routes each leg with Apple Maps, then prices it from the expressways that route uses: NEXCO expressways, the urban expressways around Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and other cities, the Honshu–Shikoku bridges, and separately tolled roads. Road names are shown as they appear on the signs, like 九州道, so you can match them as you drive. PLAN BY DAY • Add a day for each date you drive, and the stops for each day. • Days are numbered by the calendar, the same way a pass counts them. • Recently picked places are one tap away, so you don't have to search again for the hotel you return to every night. • See each day's toll, distance and driving time, then open the day for leg-by-leg detail and a map of just that day. SEE THE WHOLE ROUTE The verdict shows your whole trip on an interactive map, with each day's starting point labeled, so a wrong stop is easy to spot before you book anything. YOUR CAR AND HOW YOU PAY • Pick the vehicle by picture: light (kei), standard, mid-size, oversized or extra large. • Pay by ETC or cash. Weekend, holiday and late-night ETC discounts are applied, and paying cash on a weekend shows what ETC would have saved. • Passes are sold for standard and light cars only; for other vehicles Michi prices the tolls and tells you why no pass applies. MORE THAN ONE TRIP Keep two trips free, each with its own days, stops, vehicle and payment method. Switch, rename or delete them from the trip's name. MICHI PRO One purchase removes the ads and lets you keep as many trips as you like. Not a subscription, and shared with your family through Family Sharing. HONEST ABOUT WHAT IT KNOWS • A leg that crosses a road with no published tariff is marked as a minimum, never quietly undercounted. • Tolls are estimates, checked against the operators' published figures. • Weekend discounts leave out the days NEXCO excludes: Golden Week, Obon, the New Year holidays and three-day weekends. NEXCO announces each year's excluded days in March, and Michi updates them when it does; until then, a trip after that date is marked as priced with the discount. BEFORE YOU BOOK Expressway passes are sold only with a rental car from a participating company, and only to visitors driving with a foreign or international license. You pick the pass up with the car, so choose your rental before you arrive. PRIVACY No account needed. Your trips and the places in them are kept on your device. Place search and driving routes come from Apple Maps. Michi is supported by a banner ad, which Michi Pro removes; personalized ads are shown only if you allow tracking. Usage statistics and crash reports stay off until you turn them on in Privacy settings, and never include where you are going. Available in English, 日本語, 한국어, ไทย, 简体中文 and 繁體中文.

Fixed a crash when opening Trips in the iPad app running on Mac. Updated toll estimates with JapanTollEngine 2.3.3 and toll data 2026.10.15-2: routes from Toyota-Minami, trips that continue from the expressway onto the Hiji Bypass, and the Yuasa-Gobo Road now match NEXCO's fares.
