FrameScout is an independent Mac app for inspecting and selecting astronomical FITS images. Use it on its own or alongside FITS QuickLook Studio.
REVIEW YOUR FRAMES
Import FITS files or folders and browse grayscale previews. Inspect image dimensions, exposure metadata when available, and sampled image statistics to support your own review decisions.
KEEP, REJECT, AND ANNOTATE
Mark each frame as Keep, Reject, or Unreviewed. Add notes and search by filename. Review records and previews are saved locally so you can continue after restarting the app. Marking a frame as Reject does not delete the original.
EXPORT YOUR SELECTION
Export copies of kept FITS files into a new folder without modifying the original image data. A CSV report includes entries, decisions, available measurements, notes, and read errors.
WORK WITH FITS QUICKLOOK STUDIO
Open the exported FITS files using Studio’s normal FITS opening command. FrameScout works independently; Studio is a separate app and is not required for reviewing or exporting files. The CSV is a standalone report, not a Studio extension package.
LOCAL BY DESIGN
No account required. No advertising, analytics, or cloud uploads. Files are processed on your Mac and exported to a location you choose.
SUPPORTED FILES
Supports uncompressed 2D FITS primary images and IMAGE extensions, with BITPIX 8, 16, 32, 64, -32, and -64. Uses the first supported 2D image in each file. Supports up to 1,000 entries and files up to 512 MiB each. Compressed FITS images and 3D cubes are not supported in this version.
Statistics are calculated from a sampled preview grid, not every pixel of larger images. They are descriptive review aids, not photometric measurements or an automatic quality ranking. Saturation statistics require a supported threshold in the FITS header.
Available in English, Simplified Chinese, French, Spanish, and German. Requires macOS 14 or later.
Ratings & Reviews
- This app hasn’t received enough ratings or reviews to display an overview.
- Receive images directly from the main app and append them to the existing screening list.
- Return the images retained in the current task, together with the screening report, to the main app.
- Added options to clear the list and previews and to restore the previous session at launch. Clearing the list does not delete the original FITS files.
- Improved the title area, file list, screening statistics, and image information layout.
Main-app integration requires FITS QuickLook Studio 11.2.8 or later.
