Start the MacPherson strut course free: five lessons and a workshop job. Then unlock every system and course, paid once, yearly or monthly.
3D Mechanic shows how a car works through eight systems you can take apart and put back together in 3D. The engine alone has 256 parts, cut open so you can watch it run.
THE SYSTEMS
• Suspension: MacPherson strut, free (104 parts)
• Wishbone: double A-arm suspension (112 parts)
• Brakes: floating caliper corner with ABS (50 parts)
• Steering: rack and pinion with electric power assist (66 parts)
• Drivetrain: CV axle, joints and open differential (71 parts)
• Engine: 2.0 L twin-cam inline-four, cut open through cylinder 1 (256 parts)
• Clutch: hydraulic, from the pedal to the flywheel (62 parts)
• Gearbox: five-speed manual with synchros (77 parts)
LEARN
Start from the x-ray car on the home screen: tap a dot to open that system. There are nearly 800 parts: tap any one to see what it does, how it fails, a pro tip and its spec sheet. Run the animations: the bump test, the brake test, steering lock to lock, the four-stroke cycle, a clutch pedal press and a gear shift. The guided tour goes through every part in order, and a see-through car body shows where the system sits. You can also get print-quality parts diagrams by email.
COURSES
Seven systems have a course: five lessons on how the system works, then two workshop jobs, such as changing the front pads or replacing a driveshaft. Each job goes step by step: pick the next part, the tool, its size and the torque. Do it guided first, then on your own for stars. The MacPherson strut course's lessons and first job are free.
BUILD
Drag the parts from the workshop floor back onto the assembly, in the order a mechanic would fit them. Try one too early and it goes back to the floor: something else goes on first.
QUIZ
Three quizzes per system: name the parts on the model, put them in installation order, and answer workshop questions on torque specs and teardown order. Your best score is kept.
THE FULL GARAGE
The MacPherson strut is free, with its course's five lessons and first job. The Full Garage unlocks the other seven systems, every course and every new system as it ships. Pay once, or subscribe yearly or monthly. No ads, no tracking and no account, and it all works offline. Family Sharing is supported for the one-time purchase.

As a former mechanic these tools are very helpful even tho I can do it in person it helps me understand deeper in this app which I really enjoy I’m aiming to master transmissions so the manual transmission that was recently added was a blast but I feel like it would be better to be more detailed I’m not sure if the automatics and manuals are diff and the manual just doesn’t have friction and metal discs but I would love for it to be that way recreating real piece by piece transmissions.. for example .. brake servo the solenoids planetary gear.. sun gears..shells..the rings in between …I would love to have it that way.. I’m very satisfied for what the app has to offer as is..
Developer Response
Thanks for the detailed feedback, it's greatly appreciated, especially coming from someone with your background as a mechanic.I totally get what you mean about the transmissions, and we'd love to make them more detailed over time and visualize the different nuances. We're also working on a big update that I hope you will find useful and more detail oriented.Keep an eye out for the next few updates. Also, if you have any more suggestions or ideas on how we could improve things, we'd love for you to email us.Thanks again!
Cool but
mean potatoes
The app is cool but I shouldn’t be able to pay for the other stuff I’m a kid and I just want to learn and your preventing it and I saw this app hoping that it had something to teach me but, no I have to pay to learn.
Developer Response
Thanks for the feedback. Some of the content is paid because it helps us keep creating new 3D lessons and improving the app, but we’re also looking at ways to add and improve the free content in future updates. Thanks for giving the app a try and for sharing your thoughts, appreciated.
