For JSON and XML it shows the values that changed, not the lines that moved. Images get a slider and a difference view.
Unterschied shows what changed between two files or two folders. That is all it does, and all it is meant to do.
TEXT
Two files side by side. Removed lines in red, added lines in green — and inside a changed line, the single word that differs is highlighted as well. You don't have to scan the line to find it.
Add syntax highlighting, jumping from change to change with ⌘↑ and ⌘↓, and a narrow strip along the edge that shows every change across the whole file. A change can be copied to the left or to the right and saved. If the file was changed elsewhere in the meantime, Unterschied refuses to save rather than overwrite someone else's work.
JSON AND XML
Here the content is compared, not the lines. Reordered keys and different indentation are not differences. What actually changed is spelled out with its path:

FOLDERS
Recursive, with a status for every file and ignore patterns for .git, node_modules and whatever else you don't care about. One click opens the comparison for a single file.
Next to it sits the overview: not a table, but what changed, in words.

IMAGES
Side by side, with a slider you drag across the picture, overlaid at an opacity you choose, or as a difference view that shows only what the two do not have in common. A difference in size is left visible instead of being scaled away.
EVERYTHING ELSE
Anything that is neither text nor an image is compared by size, modification date, kind and SHA-256 checksum — instead of handing you an error message. Matching checksums mean the same file, byte for byte.
THREE-WAY MERGE
Base, your version, theirs. Whatever only one side changed is merged for you. What remains are the real conflicts, resolved one at a time with Mine, Theirs or Both — with a preview that always shows what you would get.
AT HOME ON THE MAC
Drop files on the Dock icon, use Open With, use the Finder service “Compare with Unterschied”, reopen recent pairs, work in several windows or native tabs. German and English, light and dark. The help lives inside the app: no browser, no Help Viewer, offline and searchable.
NO DATA
Unterschied connects to nothing. No analytics, no crash reports, no advertising, no tracking, no advertising identifier. Your files stay on your Mac and are only read. Nothing is written unless you say so.
