Shelve shows what is taking up space in your Mac's user Library folder, recommends what can go, and leaves the decision to you.
The Library folder quietly collects gigabytes of app caches, logs, developer build files and data left behind by apps you removed long ago. Shelve measures it all and explains every item in plain language.
HOW IT WORKS
• You choose your Library folder once. Shelve is sandboxed and can only look where you allow it.
• Every item gets a size, a location and a level: Safe, Caution or Review, with a short note on what removing it means.
• The Recommended list shows what can go without a second thought, with the reason next to each item.
• Pick what you want gone. Shelve moves it to the Trash, so you can restore it until you empty the Trash yourself.
WHAT IS RECOMMENDED
• Items of 5 MB or more that the owning app recreates automatically: caches, saved window state, logs.
• Xcode DerivedData, device support files and SwiftPM caches in which nothing has changed for 90 days.
• Never recommended: data of apps that are running right now, anything marked Review, leftovers of removed apps, cookies and web data.
WHAT IT LOOKS AT
• App caches and saved window state
• Application and crash logs
• Xcode DerivedData, archives, device support files and Simulator caches
• Homebrew, pip, SwiftPM and CocoaPods caches
• Leftover data of apps that are no longer installed
• Large items such as iOS device backups, shown for information only
BUILT TO BE CAREFUL
• Trash only. There is no permanent delete in the app.
• Keychains, iCloud Drive, Mail, Messages, Safari, Photos and Apple's own app containers and preferences are blocked from removal.
• Nothing is selected until you ask, and bulk selection covers recommended items only. Leftover detection is a heuristic, so those items are always marked Review.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
• No network access. The app cannot send anything anywhere.
• No accounts, no analytics, no ads, no third-party code.
• Data Not Collected.
Note: macOS protects some locations, such as Mail, Messages and other apps' containers, so Shelve may not be able to measure them.
