FORMTONE is an experimental, playful audio-visual creation tool. Compose with geometric forms, explore unexpected sounds, and turn your screen into a living arrangement of rhythm, image and motion.
Inspired by minimalist modernist graphic design, FORMTONE makes composition tactile and visual. Concentric shapes become sequencer tracks. Different loop lengths, note counts and phase offsets create interlocking rhythms, while overlapping paths and collisions invite unexpected variations.
PLAY WITH SHAPES
Build rhythms with geometric forms. Add notes and inner tracks, change pitches, reverse directions, and move or resize elements while listening. Force fields create new relationships between moving sequences.
EXPLORE SOUND
Combine percussion, melodic instruments, chords, arpeggios, drones and noise. Shape envelopes, choose scales and trigger probabilities, and use LFO modulation to bring movement to sound. Load compatible AUv3 instruments to explore additional timbres. AUv3 audio uses a separate output and does not pass through internal spatial effects.
MAKE SPACE PART OF THE INSTRUMENT
Place effects directly on the canvas. Move sound elements into different FX regions to explore delay, reverb, filtering and other transformations. Record movement with MOTION and let it repeat.
REWORK EVERYDAY SOUNDS
Record audio or import a sample, adjust its start point, divide it into slices, and play them sequentially or randomly. BPM sync uses pitch-preserving time stretching to fit samples to the current rhythm.
LET IMAGES AND WORDS PLAY
Import an image and scan its brightness to generate notes, with visual feedback following the scan. Turn phrases into sequences with forward, reverse, ping-pong and random playback. Explore handwriting recognition and voice-based sounds on supported devices.
CREATE A MOVING POSTER
Choose NORMAL, LOWBIT or PRINT for smooth, pixelated or irregular ink textures. Import background videos and mix beat-timed fades, reverse playback and slices behind your composition.
FORMTONE is built for experimentation, live play and discovery. Start with one form, follow what you hear, and find combinations of your own.
No account is required. Recording and optional camera control require permission. Chinese handwriting requires an initial model download. HELP includes English and Chinese instructions.
