Koyonari: Daily I Ching
A hexagram a day. A journal.
Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Each day, Koyonari casts a hexagram from the hour and the season, then gives you three things to do. Press a seal for each one and keep the day in your Daybook.
The Book of Changes, one day at a time.
Each day, Koyonari casts a hexagram from the hour and the season. It is calculated, not drawn at random: the same moment gives the same hexagram, every time. The front of today's card holds the hexagram and a short commentary. The back holds three things to do. Press a seal for each one you finish. At night, turn the card over, write a note and add a photo. Day by day, the cards gather in your Daybook, month by lunar month.
Turn the dial
The dial opens on this moment: the double-hour, the solar term, the phase of the moon, and the stems and branches of the day. Six rings turn at their own speeds, with a sound under your finger and a click in your palm. One full turn casts today's card.
A card for each day
The front holds the hexagram and its commentary. The back holds Three for today: three things to do, each marked with a seal when done, plus a note and photos from the day.
Eight scenes (Daily, Outings, Work and five more) each bring their own things to do. The hexagram comes from the time and from you; the things to do follow the scene.
Your birth details
Enter a year of birth and Koyonari, turning the year at Spring Begins, finds your Chinese zodiac animal, your star in Nine Star Ki and the Nayin of your year pillar. Add the hour of birth for a natal hexagram, marked in the Atlas. From then on, each card carries your star at its head and a small seal on its back.
One object, five finishes
Ink Jade, Paper White, Pine, Vermilion and Altar Blue. Sounds are chosen separately: a dial that ticks in boxwood, pine or brass; a bronze bowl or a stone chime as a card opens. The card itself is always Xuan paper.
A year in the Daybook
Every card stays in the Daybook, month by lunar month, with its seals, notes and photos. Open any card as it was, or search them all.
The Library opens on three rings: the 24 solar terms, the 64 hexagrams of the Book of Changes and your Natal images. Behind them sit the full Atlas and a Compendium of classical terms.
Calculated from the hour
Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches mark the year, month, day and hour, and the 24 solar terms divide the seasons. Following the Plum Blossom method, the moment becomes an image and the image a hexagram: two trigrams stacked and one changing line, giving the primary hexagram and its relating hexagram. Every step can be traced; the same input gives the same result.
Hexagram names and the stems and branches keep their Chinese characters.
Seven ways to cast
Moment: the hour and the season, with your birth details.
Question: write one question. The same words in the same double-hour give the same hexagram.
Turn: set the upper trigram, lower trigram and changing line by hand. One and a half turns casts the card.
Daily: one card in the morning to set the direction of the day.
Coins: three coins, six tosses. Shake your phone to throw them; the hexagram builds line by line from the bottom up.
Object: an object in view and the direction you face give the image, read by the Early Heaven order of the trigrams.
Numbers: two people each name a number, and together the numbers set the hexagram.
Five things we keep
Calculated · Every hexagram follows a set method, from the moment or the words, numbers or coins you give. The same input always gives the same answer.
In the present · A card holds things you can do today. It speaks of time and rhythm; the doing is yours.
Crafted · Five finishes, the sound of bowl and chime, every turn and tick measured.
Self-contained · Casting, sealing and writing notes work on your device, with or without a signal.
Always with you · Today's card is still there years from now, a record of the road you walked.
