Mossback now covers 67 areas, including nearly every US national park, from Yosemite and Zion to Denali, Acadia and the Everglades. There is a new route planner. Tap or drag on the map and the route follows the trails. Drag any stop, undo and redo, close a loop or make an out and back in one tap, and see the distance, climb, time and an elevation chart. Plan as many days as you like and Mossback finds huts, shelters and campgrounds for the nights. Find more to do than hike. Hot springs you can legally soak in, waterfalls, swimming holes, caves, fire towers, birding hotspots, winter routes, tonight's stargazing and when fall color peaks. Hunting season heads ups tell you when to wear orange. Every hike page is laid out the same way now, with a Before you go section and sunrise, sunset and golden hour at the trailhead. Each area has one Rules & info page. Mossback can tell you which way to turn at each trail junction, so your phone can stay in your pocket. Before you go, set a check-in time and text your plan to someone, and Mossback reminds you to check in. The SOS card finds the nearest emergency room anywhere in the United States with no signal, shows trauma center levels, and gives your coordinates to read to 911. Every waypoint shows its coordinates too, with one tap to copy, and you can add a waypoint by typing coordinates in decimal, degrees minutes seconds, UTM or USNG. Fishing has its own tabs, so it works like an app of its own. You can still fish while you hike. Trail crews can turn on crew tools in Settings to log work by trail number and mile, right from a Log work button on the map. Mossback now has a dark mode. Choose Light, Dark or Match my phone in Settings, and it opens faster. Mossback is free, with no account and no ads.

Mossback now covers 32 areas, with 15 new national parks added, including Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Glacier, Grand Teton and Olympic. Each park has its hikes, trailheads and parking, and you can download the map to use with no signal. Weather now comes from Apple Weather, with an hourly forecast for the next twelve hours and weather alerts for where you are headed. Fishing is much better. Rivers show live water levels, and stocked trout streams show the latest stocking. Fish pages list advisories about which fish are safe to eat, and access points show where you can get to the water. Hike pages now show the drive time to the trailhead and the nearest parking, so you know how long the drive is and where to leave the car before you head out. Tell us if anything looks wrong, like a route in the wrong place or a trailhead that is not where the app says. Report a problem is on every hike page.

Mossback now covers eight areas: Shenandoah, the George Washington and Jefferson forests including the Clinch district, the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia, the Potomac and DC area, Monongahela National Forest, Great Smoky Mountains, New River Gorge, and the Pisgah and Nantahala forests in North Carolina, with about 2,900 hikes in all. Every route was checked against the park's own figures, and hundreds were corrected. The lock screen now shows your hike and where you are on its elevation profile while you navigate, and your phone buzzes if you leave the trail, even on silent. Drag along the elevation chart in the app to read the miles and elevation at any point. The new Where? button on Explore picks one area or several at once, and Find a hike searches them together. Add trip dates and Explore shows the forecast, typical weather, what is in season and the rules that apply on those days. If you keep walking a route of your own, Mossback can ask whether you want to name it. The name stays on your phone. Can I camp here? answers in every area, with the rules cited. Hike pages show more photos, where to park, and when no lot is mapped near a start. The nature guide, foraging guide and typical weather now cover all eight areas. The app opens about three times faster than before.
