Shansu: Books & Audiobooks
80,000 books to read offline
Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Read and listen to classic books with Shansu Books. Find nearly 80,000 free ebooks from Project Gutenberg and 19,000 English audiobooks from LibriVox, and download available titles to read or listen offline.
Ready to read offline
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, A Christmas Carol and The Yellow Wallpaper come with the app. Open a complete book without an account or internet connection. Explore more English classics, download them and return to your saved place.
Find your next book
Browse rankings and recommendations in Store, including the Top 100 books and authors on Project Gutenberg for yesterday, the last 7 days and the last 30 days. Search Shansu Books by title or author from your Library, or search audiobooks in Listen; when no audiobook matches, Listen also searches ebooks from Shansu and Project Gutenberg.
Listen to audiobooks
Browse audiobooks by genre in Listen, search them and return to recent searches. Download individual chapters for offline listening, keep listening in the background and control playback from the Lock Screen and Control Center. Adjust speed, set a sleep timer, save audio bookmarks and skip back or forward. A floating record lets you return to the player while browsing the app. Like the audiobooks you want to keep and find them in your Library.
Read and listen, together
When an audiobook has a matching ebook, download it or open your local copy from the book page or player. Want to hear the book you are reading? Tap the headphones button in the reader menu to use your device's text-to-speech voice. The page follows the voice; if you turn away, tap Jump back or Listen here. The Listen player shows the current paragraph and lets you change chapters, set the speed from 0.5x to 3x, and stop after a set time or a number of chapters. Audiobooks and text-to-speech take turns, so they never play over each other.
Highlight, take notes and look up words
Select text to highlight or underline it in five colours, add a note, bookmark the page or look up a word online. Your bookmarks and highlights have their own tabs next to the chapter list. Search within a book to find any passage.
Build a reading habit
Continue from your last page, set a daily goal and see your recent reading time and streak. Reading and listening both count toward your goal. Reminders are optional, and your reading habits stay on your device.
Turns like real paper
Enjoy page curl, or choose Slide Over, Slide, Scroll or None. Adjust text size, brightness, warm light, spacing, paper colours and dark mode. Long English words break at natural hyphenation points, so justified lines stay even.
Your own books too
Import EPUB, TXT and PDF files, several at a time. iPad and iPhone Duo also support a two-page reading layout.
Free to start
The app contains ads. Optional rewarded videos unlock additional downloads or give you 30 minutes without native ads. An optional one-time purchase removes ads permanently and unlocks unlimited downloads; there is no subscription. Restore purchases with the same Apple Account.
