New to Japanese? Start from zero: every character you haven't learned yet shows romaji beside it, and each word is taught before you're quizzed on it.
Rounds take 3–4 minutes: 3D flip cards, stroke-scored writing, and N5/N4 listening at 1×, 0.75× or 0.5×.

START FROM ZERO, WITHOUT OVERWHELM
Romaji always appears next to characters you have not learned; once you can read kana, you choose whether romaji stays on or off. Kana arrive gradually, lesson by lesson, and every round teaches first and tests after, so you are never asked about a character you have not met.
SHORT 3–4 MINUTE ROUNDS
Pick a 5, 10, or 15 minute goal. Continue combines due reviews, a new round, and an optional extra, so your next step is always clear.
FLIP CARDS
Tap to flip a 3D card, swipe right to stamp it with a hanko when you remember it, swipe left to see it again later. A reading fog hides the pronunciation: wipe it away with your finger to peek, and peeking counts as not fully remembered. Review words you just learned, cards that are due, and cards you often forget.
AN ALPHABET TAB WITH STROKE SCORES
Practise Hiragana, Katakana, and kanji. Write each stroke, get a score, and see what to practise next.
GRADED LISTENING AND SHORT READING
Graded listening sets for N5 and N4 with normal or slow audio; the script and explanation appear only after you answer. Words and sentences that have audio use native-speaker voices. Short reading passages come with furigana and romaji you can switch on or off.
PITCH ACCENT ON WORD CARDS
For words that have pitch data, the high-low line appears right on the card. Switch it on or off in Settings.
REMEMBER LONGER, REVIEW LESS
Learned cards enter spaced review. Every card has a named memory stage (New, Learning, Fair, Strong, Mastered) and shows when it returns. After a break, Hiyoko brings back just a few cards before you continue.
LEAGUE AND STREAK SHIELDS
Sign in to join the weekly league and compare XP with other learners. Everyone gets 2 shields that are used automatically when you miss a day; each used shield recharges after 7 days.
THE N5–N1 PATH
Move from Hiragana and Katakana through N5, N4, N3, N2, and N1 stages. Hiyoko helps you prepare for the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (N5–N1) with a stage-by-stage study path; it is not official exam content or practice exams.
