Background checks on homes

I run background checks on every Rightmove and Zoopla home you open: what it really costs a month, what's next door, and anything else I find. I'm Inspector Walls. Open any Rightmove or Zoopla listing and I pull the file. A small card appears under the price with what living there is actually like: what it really costs a month, what's next door, and anything else I find, some of it rather lovely. THE REAL BILL Rent or mortgage, council tax, electricity, gas, water and broadband, added up into one number. Tell me who is moving in and I redo the sums for your household. RED FLAGS The demolition four metres from the front door. The 11-storey block just approved across the road, and the three years of cranes, drills and lorries that come with it. The flight path, counted in planes per day and planes per night. The road outside, from "a quiet residential street with the odd car at night" to "a main road that stays loud at night". The sewage works down the road. Crime of every recorded kind, break-ins to violence, ranked against the rest of the country and told the way a neighbour would tell you. I say what I found, how close it is, and what I could not check. GREEN FLAGS Parks, woods, rivers, beaches, the good stuff. Any agent will mention the park. I also mention the pond, the viewpoint, the landmark tree and the nearest glacial erratic. I keep a list of glacial erratics. Somebody has to. The photos show you the rooms. I tell you what living there is like, so the only viewings left are the ones you actually want: good for you, good for whoever's showing you round, mildly bad for small talk in hallways. THE CATCH There isn't one. Free, no account, no email, no card. A few checks are London first while I get the rest of the country in. Built by one person after a Saturday spent crossing London to see a flat that turned out to face a demolition. It was nobody's job to mention it. It is now mine. Not affiliated with Rightmove or Zoopla. I just turn up on their pages.

Stations, bells and a little lamp I now look for train, Underground and DLR stations you can walk to, and check for railway noise and places of worship nearby. There’s also a lamp on the card for the latest updates. New • I use the Inspector Walls Walking Atlas to find stations within about a 16-minute walk. They appear together as one green flag, with walking times, distances and map links. This includes trains, Tube, DLR, metros and trams. • The noisy places check now includes nearby places of worship, bell towers and railway tracks, with official railway noise maps where available. • The little lamp in the card’s top-right corner opens “Latest updates” and lights up when there’s something new to read. Better • Fixed walking estimates that could skip a mapped detour at the start or end of a route. I can also find routes out of private residential estates when I can locate the home precisely. • Fixed a bug that could list activity venues, such as a flying trapeze school, as nature finds. Unrelated places with the same name also stay separate. • Nearby tracks appear first in noisy places, with railway warnings and more precise distances when I know where the home is. • Shorter explanations for flight paths, noisy places, stations and nature. Fixed information pop-overs getting cut off beside the findings. • The “Usage statistics” switch has moved to the Privacy notice in “A bunch of other stuff”. Your previous choice carries over. • Fixed a bug that could make Rightmove or Zoopla redraw the listing as my card appeared. • Chrome and Edge: fixed duplicate inspections when a listing was rebuilt while loading, a jump when closing “Improve accuracy” or “A bunch of other stuff”, and a bug that could freeze animations or stop the red flags from scrolling. • Chrome: fixed inspections getting stuck loading when the extension stopped answering. • Vivaldi: fixed the toolbar icon going blank after switching the extension off and on. • Safari: fixed hard-to-read text in the toolbar popup and an unwanted scrollbar beside the card’s flags. • The website loads faster and scrolls more smoothly, especially in Safari. • Fixed website animations freezing and, in Safari, the page jumping when you switched between “To rent” and “To buy”. • The website offers separate Chrome, Edge and Safari install links and picks the main button for your browser. • Added a preview image for shared website links. • The website’s words are now readable without scripts, and archived copies open the right page. Little touches • My toolbar icon looks around while I inspect, then glances down at the card. Click it and my hat jumps. • The railway details have a little train that travels down when you open them and back up when you close them. • The website’s pages now share the same glass scrollbar. Fixed Safari showing a second scrollbar beside it. Under the floorboards Stability and security improvements, plus some tidying up.
