Fractal Atlas

Explore 24 fractals, zoom deep

Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.

Fractals are patterns that never run out of detail. Fractal Atlas lets you fly into them with your fingers. ZOOM DEEPER THAN YOU'D BELIEVE Pinch into the Mandelbrot set and keep going, trillions of times closer, with the picture staying sharp the whole way. The Sierpinski carpet and gasket and the Apollonian gasket go deeper still, about a quadrillion times. SURPRISE ME Tap the die to fly to one of 98 named places, from Seahorse Valley to a fleet of burning ships. On the Sierpinski carpet and gasket, it takes you on a spiral dive. NO MATHS REQUIRED Just pinch, drag and twist. The info card tells you in plain words how far you've zoomed and where you are, with a scale bar like a map's. The technical readout is there if you want it. SEE TWO WORLDS AT ONCE Dual view pairs a Mandelbrot with its Julia set. Drag across one and the other follows. Pick a famous Julia set and see exactly where in the Mandelbrot it comes from. 25 FRACTALS AND PATTERNS Mandelbrot, Burning Ship, Tricorn, Celtic, Multibrot, Phoenix, Julia sets, Newton's method, Sierpinski carpet and gasket, Apollonian gasket, Koch snowflake, Pythagoras tree, Hexaflake, Dragon, Hilbert and Gosper curves, Barnsley fern and more. Every one supports pan, zoom and two-finger rotation. Press play and the Koch snowflake, Pythagoras tree, Hexaflake and the dragon, Hilbert, Gosper and arrowhead curves grow and shrink by themselves. YOUR COLORS On the Mandelbrot family and the Julia sets, pick a Look: Edge glow, Stripes, Bands, Orbs, Rays or Relief. Then choose from nearly twenty colormaps, from Inferno and Viridis to Classic and Fire, tune Repeat and Shift, and set how much detail to compute. A new Relief look, the Hexaflake, and a fitting palette for every fractal. - Relief, a new Look. The fractal is lit like an embossed surface, with the light at the upper left of the screen however you twist the view. It shades your palette's colors, so Repeat, Shift and every palette work with it, and it keeps its detail at any depth. - The Hexaflake, a new fractal: a hexagon replaced by seven smaller ones, again and again. Step through the levels with a depth slider and play button, see each level in its own hue, and zoom into any corner as far as you like. - Each fractal now opens in a palette that suits it, such as the Burning Ship in Fire and the carpet in Glacier. Pick a palette yourself and it holds for every fractal; Default in the Color sheet brings each fractal's own back. - The Burning Ship opens the classic way up, hull below and masts above. - The Pythagoras tree is shaded, lit from the upper left, so the branching reads as relief. - The Sierpinski triangle is now a true equilateral triangle. - The fractal picker is regrouped: "Zoom forever" for everything you can dive into, and "Watch it grow" for shapes that build level by level. - Deep zooms finish sharpening about twice as fast.
