Learn hiragana from zero: hear every kana from a native speaker, trace it stroke by stroke, then quiz yourself. Now starring in its own App Store videos.
Learn to read and write hiragana, the first Japanese alphabet, from zero. Japanese Kana – Hiragana is made for complete beginners on the way to JLPT N5, with pictures, native Japanese audio, stroke order and quick quizzes.
FREE TO START
• The first 15 hiragana, あ to そ, are free in every part of the app
• One purchase, Unlock Everything, adds the other 89: the rest of the basic kana plus the 20 dakuten, 5 handakuten and 33 combination (yoon) kana. Buy once, keep forever, restore on any of your devices
LEARN
• All 104 hiragana: the 46 basic kana, 20 dakuten, 5 handakuten and 33 combination (yoon) kana
• One card per kana with its romaji, a picture word that uses it (あ as in あり, ant) and the word's English meaning
• Tap the kana or its word to hear it spoken by a native Japanese speaker
• A chart of every kana by group lets you jump anywhere, or play them all in order
WRITE
• Watch the stroke order draw itself, stroke by stroke, with a numbered dot where each stroke starts
• Trace each kana with your finger over a faint textbook-style guide, in one of three inks, and hide the guide when you are ready
• Print a practice sheet for pen and paper, with squares that go from tracing to writing on your own
QUIZ
• Sprint: as many right answers as you can in 60 seconds
• Survival: keep going until your first mistake
• Three modes: hear a kana and pick it, hear a word and pick its picture, or a mix of both
• Best scores for every quiz, a review of your wrong answers, and tips on what to practice next
EVERY DAY
• Kana of the Day widget for the Home Screen and Lock Screen: tap it to open that kana's card
• An optional daily reminder at the time you choose
• Apple Watch: flash cards, and Sprint and Survival quizzes on your wrist
MADE FOR EVERYONE
• A calm cherry blossom design, in light and dark mode
• Dynamic Type, VoiceOver with romaji readings, and Reduce Motion
• iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch
PRIVATE AND OFFLINE
• No ads, no accounts, no tracking and no subscriptions
• Works fully offline, and your scores stay on your device
Every kana and picture word has a native Japanese recording. Anything without one uses the Japanese voice built into iOS.

Thanks everyone for downloading Japanese Hiragana!
In this update, we've made one small change behind the scenes, so we could film the app for its new App Store videos.
Lights, camera, あ: Our App Store page now has short videos that show the app at work, from hearing a kana to tracing it and finishing a quiz. To film them, we gave the app a special recording mode that only our own test tools can turn on. Nothing changes in the app you use every day, although あ has been practicing its best side for the camera.
