Try it free for 14 days. A Finder alternative with tabs, two panes, real cut and paste and an address bar you can type into. FileRanger is a file manager for the Mac with tabs, two panes, an address bar you can type into and real cut and paste. If you come from Windows Explorer, Total Commander or Norton Commander, many of the keys you know work here too. Use it as a Finder alternative, or next to Finder. TRY IT FREE FOR 14 DAYS FileRanger is free to download. Start the 14-day trial in the app, and every feature works. When it ends, you can still browse, search, preview and open files. Copying, moving, renaming, deleting and actions then need the full version: a one-time in-app purchase, no subscription. If you bought FileRanger 1.0, you keep the full version. COMING FROM WINDOWS? • Return opens a file or folder, and F2 renames it. • ⌘X and ⌘V cut and paste files, like Ctrl+X and Ctrl+V. • The Delete key goes back to the previous folder, like Backspace. • Folders come before files, and ⇧⌘. shows hidden files. • When a name is taken, you choose to keep both, replace or skip. • Invert Selection, Copy Path and New Text File are in the menus. TWO PANES, COMMANDER STYLE Press ⌘3 to split any tab into two panes, the layout known from Norton Commander and Total Commander. Tab switches between the panes. F5 copies the selection to the folder in the other pane, and F6 moves it. TABS Keep folders open in tabs, each with one or two panes. ⌘T opens a tab, and Control-Tab switches between them. AN ADDRESS BAR YOU CAN TYPE INTO Press ⌘L or click the path, then type or paste where you want to go. Folder names complete as you type. WORKS WITH FINDER Copy and paste files between FileRanger and Finder, in both directions. Space opens Quick Look, ⌥⌘R shows the selection in Finder, and files open in your default apps. MADE FOR THE KEYBOARD • Shift-F2 renames many files at once with find and replace, regular expressions, numbering and case changes, and shows every new name first. • ⌘F searches the open folder and everything inside it while you type. Wildcards like *.pdf work too. • ⌘Z takes back the last copy, move or rename, and brings files back from the Trash. • Type the first letters of a name to jump to it. • ⌘I shows the details panel with dimensions, dates and the size of folders. A LIST AND A GRID Sort the list by any column, or switch to thumbnails when you look for a picture. The sidebar keeps your folders, drives and pinned places one click away, and Home shows the files you opened last. RIGHT-CLICK FOR THE TOOLS YOU USE The menu adapts to what you select. • Open In: your editor, terminal and IDEs • Scripts: package.json scripts and make targets, handed to your terminal • Git: status, log, pull, fetch, push and .gitignore templates • JSON: format, minify and validate • Organize: batch rename, flatten folders and sort files into folders • Archive: create and extract ZIP and TAR archives • Images: convert, resize and rotate, and turn PDFs into images • AI: copy files as context for an AI chat • Hash: SHA-256 and other checksums • Copy Path: paths, names and file URLs ADD YOUR OWN COMMANDS Describe a command in a small JSON file, and FileRanger adds it to the right-click menu wherever it fits. Placeholders like {file} and {dir} become quoted paths, so spaces in file names can’t break a command. Filters decide which files an action applies to, and the output can show in a window. The docs on fileranger.app show how. COMMANDS WITHOUT LIMITS Apple's App Sandbox lets an app start only the programs that come with macOS. Install the optional command helper in Settings, and tools from Homebrew, Git and commands in your terminal work like in any other app. NO ACCOUNT, NO ANALYTICS There’s nothing to sign up for, and FileRanger doesn’t collect data about you or your files. It runs in the App Sandbox and opens only the folders you allow.
