Tricky Tale is a puzzle adventure where every step is a decision, and the decision is arithmetic. There is no attack button. You move one tile at a time across a floor of corridors and chambers, and a fight starts the moment you walk into a monster. The fight resolves instantly, and what matters is not whether you can win it but whether you can afford it: every encounter has a price in health, and every floor ends with a boss you cannot skip. Fight the wrong enemy and you will reach that boss with nothing left. Fight too few and you will never find the key you need for the door in your way. That is the whole game, and it is a real one. The map is the puzzle. Keys open specific doors, and a door might hide a vault worth the key you spent on it, or nothing but the long way round. Potions are worth more the later you drink them. A floor you barely survive leaves you starting the next one wounded, so the route you take through a floor is what decides whether you make it out. Coins are only good for skills, and skills change the numbers you are working with — the same fight can be cheap or fatal depending on what you have spent them on. Then there is the part the title is about: the floors are full of things that are not what they appear to be. Coin piles stand up and attack you when you touch them. A staircase drops you into a trap. A monster shows you one move and plays another. A corridor that looks like a shortcut turns out to be a detour, and by the time you find out, you have already spent the health you were saving for the boss. Once you have cleared the first chapter, the Endless Tower opens. Every floor in the tower is laid out fresh, each one harder than the last, and your health carries from floor to floor instead of refilling — so a floor you barely survive is a problem you have handed to yourself. How high you climb is the score, and it is a score you can only get by reading the map properly rather than by reacting quickly. Five themed regions, each with its own monsters and its own tricks. The forest path, where the first boar teaches you to count rounds before you commit. The stone hall, where heavy armour makes a weak attack useless. The mushroom ring, where stacking defence is a wasted stat. The hollow tree, where things drain what you have left. And the Hall of Tricks itself, where the faceless jester is waiting, and where everything you have learned about reading a floor is the only thing that helps. Every monster shows you its rounds and its price before you fight. Every coin pile might be lying. Every floor ends with a boss you have to beat. How high can you climb?
